nenu SAN lo oka LUN called LUN1 provision chesi presented to server 1
Would it be possible to present the same LUN1 to server 2 as well, would it not lead to over writing of data if I do so ?
Can I have a single LUN accessed by multiple servers...
I think it may not be possible to do that in raw format, but if I create 2 partitions on LUN1 -partition A(ntfs) & Partition B(ntfs) and choose to present A to server 1 and B to server 2, is it practically possible ?
will I get user requirement of this match at all ? I am not sure what purpose this would serve in reality
normally for 2 or more servers to have access to same data you would share the data at OS level using windows sharing rather than SAN is that correct ?

First of all, what is the basic difference between SAN and NAS?

SAN lo oka oka server ke isthamu....vadu use chesina cheyakapoyina, we don't care....adhi vadidi, vadi istam....it's like wife...
NAS ante oke volume or qtree ni chala servers ki share chesthamu.....ante adhoka L anamata.....vadukunna vadiki vadukunnatha.......

so, it is not recommended to share same lun to multiple servers in SAN. inka detail ga cheppala?

Ok ba understood to certain extent now, thanks. I think I got confused between SAN & NAS usage in this particular example..

If you don't mind can I ask you to elaborate upon how NAS is able to support sharing of LUN'S between servers where as SAN allows presenting 1 LUN to only 1 server ?
If you can , why sharing of LUNs is important, is it important, I mean what will be the business need?
Why is it not recommended to share same LUN with multiple servers, what are the potential dis advantages please ?
What are the alternatives available in SAN to get round this ?
From a business perspective does it have any impact in terms of performance

Again to my basic question , if I share a LUN between multiple servers in NAS then how can I stop my server 2 from over writing the existing data which my server 1 has already written on that LUN?

Thanks very much in advance ba

hmmmm, chala questions adigav, let me try.....

If you don't mind can I ask you to elaborate upon how NAS is able to support sharing of LUN'S between servers where as SAN allows presenting 1 LUN to only 1 server ?

NAS is meant for "sharing" and SAN is meant for "dedicating"...

let me be very clear...LUN anedi SAN terminology.....there are no luns in NAS....NAS lo oka volume or qtree create chesi, multiple servers is istamu...konni servers is root access, konni servers ki read/write access istamu...

SAN lo lun create chesi, igroup create chesi (server wwpn's), then map chesthamu....in that way, only that server can c the storage....

coming to NAS, it depends on protocols, CIFS aa? NFS aa?
CIFS for windows, NFS for linux, unix......

CIFS shares kosam create a qtree and then create a CIFS share then request prakaram permissions ivvu....only those users can access the share....windows kabatti folders untayi....so entha mandi ayina oke time lo a folder open cheyachu....files matram oka sari okkare access cheyachu....for example consider this path

//filer1/share1/mine/expenses/gas expenses.xls

expenses ane folder entha mandi ayina open cheyachu oke time lo.....andhulo chala files undachu, gas expenses.xls is one of the file.....only one person can access it....vere vallu open cheyadaniki try chesthe....locked ani vasthundi....or it is read only ani vasthundi....making sure only one person can access the file any time....

NFS ayithe root, read/write permissions isthe dani batti access chestharu server admins....

did i answered your question, if yes, i'll go 2 next one....if not i'll try 2 explain further....

Ba thanks konchem clarity vachindi ippudu
Oka doubt, CIFS-nuvvu permissions ivvu annapudu are you referring to normal AD security permissions for users that are normally done using AD security groups on windows server or permissions on the NAS level ?

ante NAS/SAN usage(in this scenario) is limited to only present the volume/lun to server as a disk , and once that job is done rest of the business is normal where server OS comes in to play ?

Ok

ikkada na doubt enti ante for example if I share "//filer1/share1/mine/expenses/gas expenses.xls" with unix based server and windows based server,
Windows recognises disks that wre in fat /ntfs format, unix needs it to be in ufs etcc...how are mechanics in the background work.

For sample: Can you please advise me if below scenario is correct
I created a volume called "windows volume": shared with unix server and windows server, disk was patitioned in NTFS, so permissions set on this folder are NTFS permissions
I want unix system to be able to see data on the windows volume, right now now it's easy peasy for windows to access to the above share
however for unix to access will I then have to use smb:// path ? like the way how you would access windows file system from unix bases systems ?

I suppose SMB will take care of checking users permissions whilst accessing from unix ?
