Import of Gold
Eligible passengers returning from abroad after a minimum stay of
six months were allowed to bring 10 kgs
of gold on payment of appropriate
customs duty till 17
th
April, 2012. This provision was reportedly having
an adverse impact on the domestic jewellery industry.
A representation from All India Gems and Jewellery Trade Federation
has been received poi
nting out the misuse of this facility with a request to
reduce the quantity of gold allowed through this channel.
Government
has reduced the quantity of gold allowed to be brought by suc
h eligible
passengers returning from abroad
from 10 kgs to 1 kg with
effect from
18
th
April, 2012.
This information was given by the Minister of State for Finance, Shri
S.S. Palanimanickam in written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha

Carrying over 1 kilograms of gold to India is prohibited and will result in the gold being seized and the passenger prosecuted.

The current duty free allowance on gold taken as jewelry is still Rs. 10000 for a male passenger or Rs. 20000 for a lady passenger. These amounts were set several years ago, with the price of gold in India now at almost Rupees 29,000 for 10 grams, there is hardly any real gold jewelery these days that can be bought for Rupees 10,000. No wonder gold jewelery is going out of style! its now purchased more and more for investment purposes. Gold these days, is too expensive to buy and with chain snatching in India on the rise, wearing gold is becoming unsafe also. Note: Gold duty free limits for India have been increased effective April 1, 2013. See update in right column.

when i  returned in april , i brought 2 mapple coins by keeping then in vallet. Nobody asked me..

If you are buying gold for own use (not for re-selling) , if you pay addtional 10 or 20 dollars , shop owner will attach a small ring - then u can wear it as dollar to your chain.
