India's leading footballers are smacking their lips in anticipation of the Indian Super League (ISL), the franchise-based tournament which is scheduled to kick off in September.

While the tournament will, to a large extent, help promoters IMG-Reliance cover a major part of the Rs 700 crore they are paying the All India Football Federation (AIFF) in a 15-year deal, the footballers will be the ones likely to be the happiest at the end of the season.

The franchises will pick the players from the Domestic Player Draft in a three-day event which begins in Mumbai on Monday. There are 84 domestic players in the list.

With ISL's arrival on the scene, players like Gouramangi Singh, Syed Rahim Nabi and Subrata Paul could all earn a cool Rs 1 crore each at the end of the season, while several others will also pick up hefty sums.

Gouramangi, Nabi and Subrata are all in the highest bracket of Rs 80 lakh for the season. Besides, once the ISL comes to a close early December, these players will move to any of the 10 I-League clubs and collect an additional 35 per cent of their loan fee share.

Nirmal Chhetri, Sanju Pradhan - both earning Rs 70 lakh each - are also among the major gainers from their lucrative contracts, while India midfielders Francis Fernandes and Lenny Rodrigues could earn Rs 1.65 crore over the next three years from their deal alone, besides, of course, almost half of the loan fee share when interested clubs like Dempo Sports Club come calling.

"It's a win-win situation for everyone," said one senior player, left in the lurch last season after his club defaulted on four months payments.

"With IMG-Reliance we are assured of the payment that we are contracted for, even if we are injured during the league. With the clubs, we never know if we will get what we are promised," he said.

Thanks to spiralling player salaries and minimal returns, Indian football's rising budgets have made several top clubs think twice before handing enhanced contracts.

Some prominent clubs -East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and Churchill Brothers for example - defaulted on player payments and were warned by the AIFF's player status committee. This season, though, East Bengal and Mohun Bagan will spend lesser than previous seasons as four months' salary of their players on loan with the ISL will be paid by IMG-Reliance.
