HYDERABAD: After having successfully wooed Bill Clinton to Hyderabad in 2000, Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu is bracing for a date with US President Barack Obama when the latter is scheduled to visit Delhi as chief guest at the Republic Day Parade, 2015. Highly placed sources told TOI that preliminary work is under way between AP government and US officials to facilitate a meeting between Obama and Naidu.

"Washington and New Delhi will be signing an agreement on the US developing three smart cities in India. Since Visakhapatnam is one of them, Naidu will use the opportunity to meet Obama in the national capital," the sources said.

Apart from Vizag, the US is to develop Ajmer in Rajasthan and Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh as smart cities. According to the sources, Naidu will aim to make a presentation to Obama to showcase the investment opportunities in Andhra Pradesh, particularly Visakhapatnam. "During his meeting, Naidu will brief the progress made at Kovvada Nuclear Power Project in Srikakulam which is being developed with technical know-how from the US," the sources said.

Treating the Naidu-Obama meeting as top priority, AP municipal administration department principal secretary D Sambasiva Rao rushed to New Delhi on Saturday to meet US embassy officials and presented them details about Visakhapatnam city. Apart from the US developing Vizag as smart city, Naidu wants to get 14 AP cities included in the 100 cities that the US government has agreed to jointly develop along with civil society and local governments to provide clean water and sewerage facilities. "Naidu will also request Obama to start a US consulate office in either Visakhapatnam or in the new capital city of Andhra Pradesh," the sources added.

In the context of the new immigration policy announced by the US President which is also expected to benefit the Indians, including the Telugu community, a meeting with Obama would boost Naidu's image in the eyes of Telugu NRIs in the US. "At a time when Naidu wants to attract huge investments from non-resident Telugu people, the meeting with Obama would certainly serve his purpose," the sources said.

Apart from meeting the US President, Naidu is keen to invite Obama to Andhra Pradesh. A formal call on this will be made after the CM's return from Japan, said the sources. Naidu is planning to meet external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj after his return from Japan to explore the possibilities of the US including AP in Obama's itinerary. "But the priority is the Naidu-Obama meeting in Delhi," the sources said.
