VIJAYAWADA: In a move that could stir the hornet's nest, chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday directed the Krishna district administration to remove all encroachments on the canal bunds in the city and facilitate its beautification. The government has an ambitious plan to spend Rs 1,500 crore for beautification of Vijayawada.

He asked district collector Raghunandan Rao to coordinate with all departments to clear canal banks of all encroachments on a war footing. Stating that beautifying the city is his top priority, Naidu asked the officials to be firm in removing the encroachments. Two rivers and three major irrigation-cum-navigational canals crisscross the city giving it a Venetian look. Also several hillocks and chains of hills dot the city. He said Ryves, Bandar and Eluru canals can be developed as tourist spots.

Reviewing development works with officials here on Saturday, Naidu expressed serious displeasure at the functioning of several senior officials and asked them to improve their performance. "Officials seem to have become accustomed to the Congress work culture. I will not tolerate any laxity in administration," he told the officials. He said he was extremely disappointed with the bad sanitation conditions in the city during his surprise visit.

Later speaking to reporters, Naidu said the government will soon complete all the proposed flyovers in the city. He said all roads in the city will be widened into four lane to facilitate smooth traffic. The government will construct a township for canal bund dwellers after their eviction, he said, and added that Gannavaram airport will be developed at a cost Rs 50 crore.
