Its a documentary on public perception on how movies depict caste in TamilNadu.

 

around the 21st min, the presenter talks to a bunch of dalits who are fans of Vikram - call themselves 'Dhil Boys'. Vikram is a dalit, and this is the reason they say they are fans of the actor, besides his brilliant acting. 

 

conversation goes like this. approximately.

 

Presenter : Vikram has never declared himself as a dalit. so why do you consider him one of yours? And also, Ilayaraja has done the same (not declared himself as a dalit). Would you consider him as one of you?

 

Dhil boys: Ilayaraja is an amazing music composer. Some of his songs are incredible. But he made the mistake of glorifying Thevars (an OBC caste) in many of his films songs in the 90s. Its not right. We don't mind if he doesn't identify himself as a dalit, but atleast we wish he doesn't give more reasons for our tormentors (Thevars) to feel more and more proud of themselves.

 

Presenter: So if Vikram dons the role of a Thevar or Gounder (OBC caste groups in TN) glorifying them, will you lose respect for him too?

 

Dhil boys: Definitely. If he does that we'll still respect him as an actor, but he'll lose our support. We won't be his fans.
