Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is an All India common engineering entrance examination which is conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) for admission in various engineering colleges all over India. This exam is conducted at UG level. This exam was started from the year 2012 in place of AIEEE and IIT JEE. There are two types of JEE - JEE Main and JEE Advanced. JEE Main is for getting admission into NIT's (National Institute of Technology), IIIT's (Indian Institute of Information Technology), CFTIs (Central Funded Technical Institute) and IIEST Shibpur. JEE Advanced is for getting admission into IIT's (Indian Institute of Technology) and Indian School of Mines Dhanbad. Admission for these institutes will depend on the performance of the student in their class 12 or equivalent qualifying exam along with their score in JEE Main. Candidates will be given admission based on their all India ranks calculated with JEE Main 2016 scores and the normalized marks of class 12 in the ratio of 60:40.

The application form for JEE Main 2016 will be tentatively available from the month of December 2015. One month time will be given for the students to submit the form. The JEE Main is expected to be conducted in the month of April 2016.

Eligibility Criteria

Central Board of Secondary education (CBSE) has made it very clear that only eligible candidates can appear for JEE Main 2016 examination. The eligibility criteria include the following.

Date of birth

Only those candidates who are born on or after October 1st 1990 are eligible to write this exam. In case of SC/ST and Persons with disabilities there is a relaxation of five years provided to the candidates. So the persons who are born on or after October 1st 1985 are eligible for this exam. The date of birth mentioned in the secondary education board or university certificate will only be considered for this case.

Year of appearance

Only those candidates who have passed in their 12th or any equivalent qualifying examination for the academic year 2014-2015 or those who are appearing for their 12th or any equivalent qualifying examination for the year 2016 are eligible to write JEE Main. Candidates who did not pass 12th or who are passed outs of the previous years cannot apply for this examination.

Number of attempts

The number of attempts is limited to three for JEE Main 2016.

Number of subjects in the qualifying examination

The candidates appearing for JEE Main should have taken at least five subjects in XII or any qualifying examination to become eligible to write JEE Main 2016. If any candidate who has taken four subjects provide false information and appear for JEE Main then their rank or result will not be announced.

A candidate does not become eligible for admission just because they become eligible to appear for the JEE Main. The admission to the colleges is based on the all India ranking based on their scores. States of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Nagaland, Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Orissa have joined the JEE Main recently. Previously these states were admitting candidates based on their state level examination. So candidates seeking for admission in these states should check out the eligibility criteria of these states as laid down by the state government of such states.

Type and Mode of examination

JEE Main contains two papers Paper 1 for B.E/B.Tech and Paper 2 for B.Arch and B.Planning. Candidates may select the papers based on their choice of admission. The subject combinations, mode of examination and type of questions in the examination will differ for the two papers.

Paper 1:

Paper 1 includes Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. All the questions are objective type questions with equal weightage to all the subjects. Paper 1 is conducted in two modes either computer based or paper and pen based examination.

Paper 2:

Paper 2 includes Mathematics Part 1, Aptitude Part 2 and Drawing test Part 3. Paper 2 of JEE Main will be conducted only in Pen and Paper based examination mode.
