IPL 2018: 5 players who could attract a massive bid

Every time there is a new season of IPL, it gets bigger and better than the previous year. We are still 5 months away from it, but there is no shortage of excitement and talk about the competition. 

IPL is entering its second decade and the most exciting news so far is the return of CSK and Royals after a ban of 2 years. There is no confirmation yet on the no of players a franchise can retain but it is not going to be more than five. The auction will decide who is going to play where.

With every team required to play 7 Indian players, they demand a lot of money in the auction. All-rounders generally go for a lot of money. Left-arm spinners and death over specialist will attract a lot of attention in the auction.

Let's see 5 players who could attract a massive bid in IPL 2018. We have ignored the players who are most likely to be retained.

#5 Rahul Tripathi, India

Rahul Tripathi has been one of the finds of 2017 IPL. He played some eye-catching knocks during the 2017 IPL season. He was on the list of top 10 run getters and played a major role in Rising Pune Supergiants run to the final in 2017. 

Opening the batting in his debut season for Supergiants, he scored a massive 391 runs in IPL 2017 with a strike rate of 147. Rahul Tripathi is not a power hitter by any means but is a beautiful timer of the cricket ball. He has a vast array of strokes and relies on timing and uses the bowler's pace beautifully. 

He was taken by Pune for just ₹10 lakhs in the auction last year but expect intense bidding for him in the 2018 auction. 

#4 Krunal Pandya, India

With 240 runs and 10 wickets, Krunal Pandya was one of the success stories for Mumbai Indians in the 2017 edition of Indian Premier League. He rescued Mumbai Indians from 79 for 7 in the final of 2017 against Rising Pune Supergiants and conjured a Man of the Match performance.

He is a tidy left-arm spinner and a hard hitter. His economy of 6.82 was the best for any Mumbai bowler during the last IPL campaign. 

It looks like every team will be allowed to retain a maximum of 3 players for the 2018 IPL, and Mumbai will have no option but to let Krunal Pandya go. He will have no shortage of pursuors for his skill, and his all-round abilities will make him a big catch in the 2018 auction.

#3 Ben Stokes, England

There is absolutely nothing the man can't do on a cricket field. He can hit the ball really hard, he can bowl at pace, he can bowl yorkers and is a stunning fielder. He is one of the best all-rounders in the world right now. Stokes scored 316 runs and took 12 wickets in the 2017 edition of IPL.

With Rising Pune Supergiant out of IPL 2018, Ben Stokes will go into the auction this year. He was the costliest player in last year auction and don't expect anything different this time around.

Ben Stokes is an absolute asset regardless of the format. RCB will most likely not retain Shane Watson - so expect them to go big for Ben Stokes. CSK and Mumbai Indians will also be eager to bag him.

With his stunning hundred against India at Rajkot in the 2nd Twenty20 International (T20I), Colin Munro stamped his authority as one of the most fearsome hitters in T20 cricket. 

Playing for the Trinbago Knight Riders in Caribbean Premier League 2017, Colin Munro scored 366 runs from 13 matches at a strike-rate of 135.05 to lead his team to the 2017 League title. 

His ability to hit from the word go and his ability to play spinners will make him a valuable asset for any team. With New Zealand not scheduled to play any games in the majority of April and May next year, Colin Munro will be available to his franchise for most of the games.

His slow medium pace will be more than useful in some of the Indian pitches. Expect some crazy bidding for this Kiwi wonder.

The dashing left-hander from Trinidad has been touted as the next big thing in West Indies cricket. He turned everyone's attention towards him when he brutally demolished India with a hundred in a T20I game last year.

He once again gave the knockout punch to India in a T20I game this July with a brutal 125* with 12 sixes.

Evin Lewis opens the batting with Chris Gayle in Twenty20 International (T20I) and on few occasions this season he completely outscored Gayle. He was only the third batsman to score 2 hundred in T20I's and has a T20 strike rate of more than 150. He can hit the ball as hard as anyone in world cricket and does it with consummate ease.

Every IPL team will look to have a player of his caliber in the squad. Expect a bidding war for this dynamite from Trinidad.

Governing Council, franchise owners to deliberate on IPL roadmap

With a new broadcaster and a revised central pool of sponsors on board, BCCI expects the Indian Premier League (IPL) to begin on a fresh note in 2018. To this effect, a meeting of all franchise owners and its senior executives has been called for on November 21, to be presided by the executives handling the operations of the league, its governing council and other vital stakeholders.

 

 

Right at the top of matters that need to be dealt with on an immediate basis are the following:

 

 

 

1. Take a categorical view of the new central revenue pool that more or less dictates the functioning of the league's overall financial model
2. To ensure that IPL retains its competitive edge and a balance gets created between all franchises so as to maintain a sense of equality at all times
3. Debate if an annual auction of cricketers needs to be pursued with in the same form; IPL seeks collaborative approach to chart way forward.
4. Ascertain what kind of a salary purse is justifiable for franchises to spend on players annually , more importantly considering that the revenues of the franchises have shot up already
5. Take into account views of all franchises on player-retention and fix the number of players for the same.

 

 

 

Franchises do understand that their revenues from IPL's central pool have shot up massively, given the humongous bid of INR 16347 crore that Star India Pvt. Ltd. made to secure the league's broadcast rights for the next five years. In line and in sync with Star's assessment of the property's value and Chinese telecom major Vivo picking the title rights for INR 1079 crore, the league justifiably expects the central revenue pool - by way of sponsorship and other commercial partnerships - to hike up massively.

 

 

Until the previous edition, each franchise on an average was raking up close to or in excess of INR 75 crore per season. That figure alone is now expected to go beyond INR 220 crore per franchise given the 50-50 sharing ration of the central pool between them and BCCI. It is now for the league to decide whether, going forward, the salary purse for franchises to spend on cricketers annually needs to be substantially increased and in what proportion.

 

 

"The BCCI needs to bear in mind that there has to be a fair balance between all eight franchises so as to retain the competitiveness. That's paramount, so it's a thin line that separates the well-being of the league vis-a-vis the wellbeing of the franchises and its players and both need to be dealt with effectively," say those from the IPL fraternity .

 

 

In the present scenario, the franchises and the league, both, understand that retention needs to be in place. Six of the eight franchises have, in fact, said yes to it and one of the two franchises that actually said no to retention is the one that is in last rounds of talks with a potentially serious buyer.

 

 

Three franchises want to retain at least five cricketers so as to maintain the nucleus of the team, an idea to which the league may have no objections. BCCI believes that given how these franchises invested in the IPL 10 years ago, when the business model of the league was yet to settle down, there's no harm whatsoever if they demand what is in best interests as far as team building and retaining a certain amount of brand consciousness is concerned. To do, in turn, is do away with the annual auction fanfare. The idea is to hold an auction for new cricketers on the block while allow franchises to retain the more popular names and buy or sell them only through the December transfer window.

 

 

As far as the players are concerned, once their contracts with franchises ended, they always retained the choice to head back into the auction pool, besides the option of the trading window.

 

 

Decisions concerning these factors could be taken on or post 21st, once the franchise owners meet the league executives to build a collaborative approach.

IPL 2018: 3 players that Rajasthan Royals must retain

Rajasthan Royals were the inaugural champions of the IPL in 2008 and will be back in the fray after two years of suspension. The tournament's governing council has confirmed that all teams will have the option of retaining a select number of players. The exact number as well as combination will be revealed when the various franchises meet on November 21.

If Royals are to win the title after ten long years, it will be important for them to choose these three talented players.

#3 James Faulkner

James Faulkner can be retained by the Rajasthan Royals as he was part of the team in 2015 before the franchise got suspended. The Australian can be very handy both with the bat and ball.

He has taken 59 wickets in the IPL including two 5-wicket hauls which came in the same season. He had an impressive outing in 2013 wherein he picked up 28 wickets in 16 matches.

Faulkner has also finished games for Rajasthan with the bat. Though his recent form does not appear adequate, he is a proven batsman during pressure situations in the death overs. Considering he is just 28 years of age, it will be a wise decision for the Royals to retain the all-rounder.

#2 Ajinkya Rahane

Rajasthan can retain Ajinkya Rahane as he was playing in the team right when they were suspended. He has mainly played as an opener in Royals team over the years.

It was under Rahul Dravid's coaching where Rahane really played some great knocks for the Royals. He scored 372 runs for Rising Pune Supergiant in last year's IPL season. Across all seasons, he has scored 3057 runs in 111 matches with 1 century and 25 half centuries.

Rahane has a point to prove that he belongs to limited overs format and that he can also adapt to different situations. Having led India to a series-deciding triumph in the Dharamsala Test as well as sporadic captaincy appearances for Supergiant, he has reasonable leadership experience.
