Never Ever Say !

Suddenly a Recruiter calls you about a new opportunity.

You've heard that it's now illegal in some places for Recruiters to ask about your CURRENT compensation.  Most Recruiters now just ask about a compensation EXPECTATION.

This is your chance!!!

"I need 190K  base plus bonus," you confidently say.

Recruiter says:  "OK, do you have any flexibility at all?"

Recruiter thinks:  "Yes, and I'd like an endangered Albino Squirrel Monkey here in two days via Amazon Prime to be my permanent cuddle buddy."

Just because they don't/can't ask what your current comp is, good Recruiters actually know the market and what someone with your skills/experience is generally making.

It's obviously reasonable to give a salary expectation higher than what you're currently making, but Recruiters and Hiring Managers know when something is unreasonable.

Because they know the market.  Probably better than you do.

I see too many candidates try this and it costs them opportunities, credibility, and often both.
