BCCI to recce South Africa as possible IPL 2019 venue

BCCI to recce South Africa as possible IPL 2019 venue
A recce team of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is setting out for South Africa to see the preparedness of the country to host the Indian Premier League (IPL) next year. A two-member team is expected to leave Mumbai in a day or two to explore the hypothetical situation of the league being moved there next year in view of the general elections. The recce is expected to last for about 10 days.

This paper had reported on September 11 about the possibility of the IPL bandwagon moving to South Africa in view of the elections next summer. The team of Hemang Amit and Navneet Kaur will travel to Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth to discuss the requirements for the 45-day tournament.

As per the information provided to Cricket South Africa, the tournament will be held in the first quarter of the year and the two boards want to make sure that the IPL games do not clash with South Africa’s own domestic matches. The understanding is that should there be a necessity to move all the IPL games (like in 2009), South Africa will be the preferred choice.

The UAE, like in 2014, will be chosen if the need is to shift only a part of the tournament. Amin and Kaur are also slated to break journey in Dubai on their return and discuss with the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) about hosting some IPL matches there.

The final decision on the eventual destination for IPL-12 will be made after the dates of the general elections are announced but the BCCI wants to remain prepared with all the plans. The thinking now is that if the elections are held as in 2014 (from April 15), there may be a chance that the first 20 games will be played in India, the next 20 in the UAE and the business end of the tournament again in India. Should the polls be advanced, as is being speculated in some quarters, the entire league may require a shift and CSA will have to host the tournament.

Shikhar Dhawan keen to leave Sunrisers Hyderabad, could open for Mumbai Indians with Rohit Sharma in IPL 12

Shikhar Dhawan

Shikhar Dhawan is all set to play for Mumbai Indians (MI) in the 12th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) next year. According to reports, the left-hander is keen to leave Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and join hands with Rohit Sharma at MI.

Dhawan, who has been one of the top performers at SRH over the years, is allegedly unhappy with the Hyderabad franchise for not retaining him initially at the IPL auctions earlier this year. He was only retained by SRH with a 'Right To Match' card for Rs 5.2 crore. It's even rumoured that Dhawan had an argument with SRH coach with Tom Moody during IPL 2018.

Dhawan is undoubtedly one of the premier white-ball batsmen in India, and he has expressed his displeasure to SRH for not getting a similar fee to the likes of Rohit (Rs 15 crore), Virat Kohli (Rs 17 crore) and Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Rs 15 crore).

"That’s right. If we get a couple of good players as a trade-off (with MI), we’re open to it," a top SRH official was quoted as saying by Mumbai Mirror.

Although Delhi Daredevils and Kings XI Punjab are also showing interest in acquiring the services of Dhawan, the 32-year-old is keen to go to MI, where he enjoys a healthy on-field and off-field equation with Rohit.

Dhawan signed a three-year contract with SRH earlier this year, but he could be released due to his disinterest with the franchise. The IPL auctions will most likely be held in the third week of December. The trading window will remain open till a week before the auctions. There's plenty of time for Dhawan to make the switch.

HIGHLIGHTS

The left-handed India opener apparently had an argument with coach Tom Moody.

He wanted to be retained as the No. 1 or No. 2 player in the franchise, in which case his fees could have run into Rs 10-12 crore.

A top Sunrisers official admitted to being in discussions with Mumbai Indians to trade Dhawan.

IPL 2019: Shimron Hetmyer could be the hottest property in the IPL auction

Young Shimron Hetmyer has lit up the cricketing world with his explosive batting in the ODI series against India Young Shimron Hetmyer has lit up the cricketing world with his explosive batting in the ODI series against India

Through his explosive batsmanship in the first two ODIs against India, the young Guyanese Shimron Odilon Hetmyer has captured the imagination of the whole cricketing world.

He had come to India on the back of his power-packed performances for Guyana Amazon Warriors in the CPL. With the backing of former West Indian superstars such as Viv Richards and Brian Lara, he was fast-tracked to the senior team. Even though his performances in the Test series left a lot to be desired, he has lit up the cricketing world through his explosive and fearless batting in the ODI series against India.

Though one could easily compare him to the way Chris Gayle bats, let’s hope he emulates the other great West Indian and his idol Brian Lara, more than anybody else. It’s too early to predict how far he would go but he clearly has the potential to reach great heights.

The way he took the Indian bowlers to the cleaners in both the matches showed that he has taken to international cricket like a fish takes to the water. Of course, going forward, he will be under scrutiny; and every single weakness of his will be analysed by opposing teams with every technical deficiency being exploited.

But if one goes by what the West Indian team management and former superstars have to say about him, he seems to be not just supremely talented, but also someone who wants to keep improving all the time.

All the IPL franchises must be keeping an eye on this exciting talent. Kolkata Knight Riders, who have an exciting crop of Indian youngsters, would love to add an international star, who is making a mark at the highest level at such a young age, to their mix.

Mumbai Indians would love to first get back Prithvi Shaw from Delhi Daredevils and also have Hetmyer, thus ensuring that they have two of the most promising young cricketers in their team. Teams like Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab which have lacked fire power in their middle and lower middle order would do well to have someone like Hetmyer who can bring an explosive closure to their innings.

Jamaica Tallawahs v Guyana Amazon Warriors - 2018 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) Tournament

For that matter, a power-packed line of batting superstars in Royal Challengers Bangalore would like to have Hetmyer to replace Quinton de Kock whom they traded off to Mumbai Indians for the 2019 IPL season.

In general, we Indians love the West Indian cricketers, especially if they happen to play in the typical calypso style of yore. And we also love stylish left-handers, whether it’s our own Sourav Ganguly or the great Brian Lara. One can safely predict at this juncture that come 2019 IPL auction, the 22-year old Shimron Odilon Hetmyer will be at the top of the wish list of every IPL franchise.

IPL 2019 Transfer: Mumbai Indians, King XI Punjab eye Sunrisers Hyderabad opener Shikhar Dhawan

Published on October 24, 2018  by Anirudh Singh

Opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan could be the first big name in Indian cricket to move to another team under the IPL transfer window ahead of the players’ auction in mid-December.

Dhawan is likely to get transferred from his existing IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Mumbai Indians (MI) could rope in the southpaw who is apparently unhappy with the remunerations he’s getting.

Dhawan wasn’t retained by the Sunrisers ahead of the IPL 2018 auctions but was bought by using the right to match (RTM) card for Rs 5.2 crores in the players’ auction. The franchise had retained left-handed batsman David Warner (Rs 12 crore) and right-arm pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar (Rs 8.5 crore) during retention process.

According to reports, Preity Zinta co-owned Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) is also eyeing the Delhi batsman. If the deal gets finalised then Dhawan might be swapped with KXIP batsman Karun Nair.

IPL auction

An official announcement regarding the same is expected to be made soon as the transfer window for the ongoing season will end on November 15.

Dhawan has been a star performer for the SRH and he played a crucial role in IPL 2018 when his side went into the finals, eventually losing to MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He has played for Mumbai Indians in 2009 and 2010 before moving to Hyderabad in 2011.

Dhawan has so far scored 4057 runs from 143 games in the world’s best T20 league.

KXIP trade Stoinis for Mandeep with RCB

After Mumbai Indians acquired the services of Quinton de Kock, Kings XI Punjab have now traded Marcus Stoinis for Mandeep Singh, acquiring the 26-year-old from Royal Challengers Bangalore.

This swap has been done in IPL's first trading window, which started after the conclusion of the 2018 edition and will end a month before the auction. A second window will be available for the teams after the auction till the start of the competition in 2019.

Stoinis had been sold to the RCB at the 2018 auctions but KXIP used their Right-To-Match card, paying a whopping INR 6.20 crore. As regards to Mandeep, RCB had outbid KXIP at the auction, and had the winning bid of INR 1.40 crore.

KXIP had a tumultuous last season, finishing second-last despite KL Rahul's red-hot run of form. Captained by Ravichandran Ashwin, the side struggled with its middle-order and Mandeep Singh's acquisition seems to be a step towards rectifying that. Mandeep was the designated finisher for RCB but didn't quite deliver, as 252 runs across 14 matches testify.
