The 12th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) due this year will take place earlier than scheduled because of the ICC World Cup beginning on May 30 in England. The tournament is likely to begin in March though the announcement of the fixture has been delayed further and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to announce the schedule in a week’s time.

 

 

Besides the advancement of the schedule due to the World Cup which is following next, the itinerary of the IPL also depends on the Lok Sabha election which is also due in a few months’ time. The schedule of the tournament was expected to be announced on February 4 but it didn’t happen and the BCCI is reportedly working closely with the Election Commission and other concerned authorities.

“We’re working closely with the Election Commission and all the authorities concerned and hopefully it will be out in a week,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying by the Mumbai Mirror. The poll panel hasn’t yet announced the schedule of the general elections and that has impacted the decision on the IPL itinerary as well.

The clash of the IPL with general elections took place twice in the past. In 2009, the entire tournament was shifted to South Africa while in 2014, the initial matches of the tournament were played in the UAE and then it was shifted later to India. The starting date of the upcoming edition of the IPL has already been confirmed to be March 23 and also the BCCI said last month that it will be played in India.

Things are tighter for the IPL organisers this year because of the general elections as well as the World Cup. India will be the last team to begin their campaign at the mega event for there has to be a fixed gap between the IPL and the next international assignment.

The BCCI is yet to announce the fixtures of IPL, but the coach of the Indian Cricket Team, Ravi Shastri, has already voiced his concern about player's workload going into the World Cup.

The Indian Premier League is slated to be played from the month of March this year but the BCCI is yet to announce the fixtures of IPL 2019 season. The franchise-based cricket league is one of the leading T20 tournaments across the world. Every participating team has many star players who are also the key members of the Indian Cricket Team. The same aspect is worrying India head coach Ravi Shastri, who has voiced his concern over the players' full participation in the tournament. The Cricket World Cup will be played in the month of May-June this year, so how the workload of the cricketers is managed during the IPL will be interesting to see.

India are coming back home after a hectic schedule with playing back to back series in Australia and New Zealand. The last thing that the Indian think tank will want going into the World Cup is getting one of their prime players injured while playing in the IPL. Addressing this issue, Shastri has said that the management of the team will talk with the franchise owners and captains of the respective teams to allow players just to play an optimal part of the IPL.

However, it has already been confirmed that IPL will be played in India from March 23. BCCI, in the month of January, had announced that the league will remain in India. It came after reports had suggested the tournament might be moved outside due to General Elections.

In 2009, the T20 league was played in South Africa while in 2014, a part of the league was played in UAE due to General Elections. This year, the same could have been the case but BCCI seems to have made adjustments. (Also Read: Sachin Tendulkar heaps praises on Jasprit Bumrah)

There can also be a case when a franchise might not get to play all seven matches at home stadium. The franchises might be told about this by BCCI as there can always be a change in fixtures due to elections. This year’s IPL will end early due to World Cup 2019 that will kick off on May 30.

PL 2019: Rajasthan Royals to don pink jersey for new season

Indian Premier League 2019: Rajasthan Royals had worn a pink jersey for one match last year to raise cancer awareness but have now changed their colour to pink from blue ahead of the new season.

Rajasthan Royals have changed their colour ahead of the new season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), which is set to start on March 23, 2019. Rajasthan Royals, who wore a blue-coloured jersey for the 9 IPL seasons they played, will now embrace the colour pink. The new pink jersey which was unveiled on the show Halla Bol on Sunday, will have blue colour on the neckline and the end of the shirt's sleeves.

Rajasthan Royals's captain Ajinkya Rahane and brand ambassador Shane Warne revealed that it was the reactions of the fans to their one-match pink jersey last year that made the team think of wearing it throughout.

 

"We wore pink for cancer awareness in one match last year and the fans loved it. Then we thought that Jaipur is the pink city and we should be wearing pink," Rahane said on the show.

Rahane in fact revealed that Shane Warne is a funny character as he introduced this pink doll thing in the Rajasthan camp.

"We have this thing in Royals - the pinky doll. So whoever is late to the ground or late to the bus when we are travelling, he has to carry the pinky doll with him for the next 24 hours."

Shreyas Gopal said he was left shaken by the eating habits of Warne. "He has butter naan with tomato sauce and he loves it. Then 20 scoops of ice cream and french fries - he loves all of that and I saw that and was like I can't digest that."

IPL 2019 schedule to be released after announcement of general election dates: BCCI official

Speaking to Hindustan Times, a senior BCCI official said that it was impossible to release the schedule of IPL 2019 before the dates of the general election are out.

Putting a rest to all rumours doing the rounds, a senior Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) official confirmed to Hindustan Times that the schedule for the 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League will be announced only in March after the dates of the general election are released. With the whole tournament set to be played in India, it is important that matches are scheduled in accordance to the dates of election which will be held in multiple phases.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, a senior board official said that it was impossible to release the schedule of the tournament before the dates of the general election are out as matches need to be planned keeping the dates in mind as elections are held in different phases.

“The schedule will take some time as we need to wait for the general election dates to be released by the election commission. Since this is the most important event in the calendar year, one has to ensure that we work according to the dates and plan the games in a way that everything is in sync. We all know the kind of arrangement that goes behind hosting elections and that is the priority,” he explained.

The IPL is set to get underway on March 23 and the final will be played in Chennai as the Chennai Super Kings won the 11th edition of the cash-rich league. Interestingly, this will be the first time that the league will be played without a chairman as the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) disbanded all committees and sub-committees after the registration of the new constitution.

The CoA issued a letter on August 23 and handed the majority of the powers to the CEO and the CFO till fresh election is conducted in the BCCI and new members take control. It quoted the August 9 judgment of the Supreme Court and the newly registered constitution of the BCCI in doing so. The CoA also informed the office-bearers that all the committees and sub-committees of the BCCI had been abolished except for the Cricket Advisory Committee and the duly reconstituted selection committees.

A senior Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) official has finally laid rest to rumours related to the schedule of the 2019 edition of IPL with the final set to take place at the home of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Speaking to Hindustan Times, a senior official explained the delay in schedule saying that it wouldn't be possible for the BCCI to release the schedule before the dates for the general elections are out. The IPL matches will need to be planned in accordance to election dates as various states go to polls in different phases.

In 2009, the lucrative competition was shifted to South Africa due to it being an election year in India. Again during the 2014 elections, a few league stage matches were conducted in the UAE. However, the official confirmed that this will not be the case with the BCCI obtaining the go ahead to host all IPL 2019 matches in India.

 

Speaking about the delay in schedule he explained, “The schedule will take some time as we need to wait for the general election dates to be released by the election commission. Since this is the most important event in the calendar year, one has to ensure that we work according to the dates and plan the games in a way that everything is in sync. The IPL 2019 is set to kick-off on March 23 and CSK, who were the winners of the previous edition, will host the final.

 

This will be the first time that the entire IPL season will be held in the country during the election year. It will also be the first IPL tournament to be held without a Chairman in place.

IPL 2019 schedule announced for first 2 weeks

Defending champions Chennai Super Kings will take on Royal Challengers Bangalore in the opening match of IPL 2019 in Chennai on March 23. The schedule, which was announced on Tuesday (February 19), was only for the first two weeks of the tournament and "subject to the announcement of the Lok Sabha 2019 election dates."

 

 

The BCCI, which is awaiting details of the 2019 elections, stated that once the polling dates are decided it would "address any issues with the first two weeks and will also prepare a schedule for the remainder of the season working with the local authorities around the polling dates."

 

 

As per the current schedule, as many as 17 matches will be played from March 23 to April 5, with three double-header days on March 24, 30 and 31.

 

 

Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers will play five games in the said period while the remaining six teams will play four matches each. The Capitals are scheduled to play three home games in the first two weeks while the Royal Challengers will play three away games. The rest of the teams will play two home and two away games each.

The 2019 IPL will begin with defending champions Chennai Super Kings taking on Virat Kohli's Royal Challengers Bangalore at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on March 23.

The schedule for the first two weeks of the tournament was made public on Tuesday, listing out the first 17 matches, which will take place over two weeks. In this period, six of the teams will feature in four games apiece, with Bangalore and Delhi Capitals playing five of their league fixtures, and all teams will have two home fixtures, with only Delhi hosting three games.

The announcement from the IPL's governing body, though, came with a caveat: the dates are subject to changes, because the 2019 general elections across India are scheduled around the same time period.

"Once the election dates are released we will address any issues with the first two weeks and also prepare a schedule for the remainder of the season working with the local authorities around the polling dates," a statement on the IPL website said.
