Franchise owners’ decision on which players to rest, keeping World Cup in mind, also important: BCCI

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has opined that the number of matches India's players feature in IPL 2019 will also depend on the decision of their franchise owners.

While the preparations for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 have already begun, many countries have asked their players to skip the tournament considering the ICC World Cup 2019 will kick off just two weeks after the end of the tournament. While it remains to be seen whether key Indian cricketers will play all matches in the 12th edition, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has opined that while selectors are yet to decide over the matter, the decision of franchise owners is also crucial considering the players have signed lucrative contracts with the franchises.

Speaking to Times Now, BCCI's acting secretary Amitabh Chaudhary said, “selectors are deciding on which all players representing India at World Cup should be given how much rest during the IPL. The decision of franchise owners is also important in this because they have signed a contract with those players.”

Chaudhary also added that whether to give rest to players in IPL 2019 will depend on the following four factors:
1) Managing workload of players is crucial. If a player asks for more matches, he will be given more matches to play in the IPL.
2) Selectors to also take a call on the number of matches India’s players from the World Cup squad would play.
3) Opinion of head coach Ravi Shastri and assistant coaches will also be taken into account.
4) The opinions of franchise owners will also be taken into consideration as they have signed deals with the cricketers.

Glenn Maxwell and Aaron Finch are two of the high profile names who did not go into IPL 2019 auctions and later opted out of the 12th edition. While the IPL 2019 will give Indian players enough time to play competitive cricket, there are also fears of key players getting injured ahead of the quadrennial extravaganza. On the other hand, Steve Smith and David Warner, who will complete their 12-month ban on March 29, were retained by Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad. Considering they haven’t played much international cricket, it remains to be seen whether they will be available for the entire edition of the tournament.

The BCCI is likely to discuss the matter in a meeting scheduled for March 7 in the national capital.

IPL 2019: Teams likely to have multiple 'home' venues

Due to seven-phase voting for the general elections, the teams are likely to have four home games and the rest three in 'designated' home venues to avoid clash with polling dates.

The final fixtures of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is expected to be released later this week but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) faces a huge challenge to ensure that the teams play seven matches at home.

With the country heading for seven-phase elections, states like West Bengal and Maharashtra have multiple voting dates, and that makes the job far more difficult for the Board to keep all the home games at a single venue.

"We are working out on all the possible options. It will take a bit of time before we finalise the schedule," a Board official said.

Given the scenario, chances are high that teams will have four home games and the rest three will be 'designated' home games.

The Board has already kept Rajkot, Indore, Visakhapatnam, Lucknow and Dharamsala as back-up venues.

There are also talks that teams like Rajasthan Royals could play three matches at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. However, there is no confirmation yet.

"A lot depends on the state administration as well. If the local police assures us security then things could go smoothly. But still a lot of discussions could be required," one of the franchise officials said.

The Board officials are expected to speak to the local police of states like West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Delhi and also with the stand-by states before finalising the fixture.
