Sunrisers Hyderabad confirm trading 'unsettled' Shikhar Dhawan

Sunrisers Hyderabad have stated that the main reason behind opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan being traded to Delhi Daredevils was that he was "unsettled" over the amount the franchise paid him at last year's IPL auction.

Every franchise is allowed four retentions before a player auction, but Sunrisers only retained David Warner and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Dhawan, along with their lead bowler, the lespinner Rashid Khan, was retained by Sunrisers through the right-to-match card. Sunrisers paid INR 5.2 crore (approx USD 820,000 at the time) to buy Dhawan back. But, as reported earlier, Dhawan was not happy.

Dhawan was the most expensive player at Sunrisers until two years back, after they had retained him for INR 12.5 crore (approx $1.865 million at the time). However, with Warner's emergence as the key player, and the growing stature of Kane Williamson, Dhawan found himself somewhat pushed away from the leadership group.

In a media statement issued on Monday, Sunrirsers said the rules did not permit an increase in the amount using the RTM card unless they had signed Dhawan in the open auction for a bigger price. "The Sunrisers were delighted to pick up Shikhar in the auction after using one of its RTM (right to match) cards earlier in the year," the statement said. "Unfortunately, it has become apparent that the player has been unsettled ever since with the amount he was bought for in the auction, which unfortunately we cannot rectify due to IPL rules."

The decision to trade Dhawan, Sunrisers said, was made with a "heavy heart", and mainly because the player was not happy. "The franchise has made the decision to trade Shikhar as they feel it is best for both parties. Sunrisers values the great contribution that Shikhar has made over the years and saddened that due to financial reasons he feels it's time to move on."

Daredevils have welcomed the inclusion of "local boy" Dhawan. It is a homecoming for the batsman, who hails from Delhi and played for Daredevils in the inaugural IPL season in 2008. This is Daredevils' first trade ahead of the auction.

Parth Jindal, one of the owners and the director of Daredevils, said Dhawan brought immense experience to the roster and would help "solidify" their top order.

IPL 2019 auction to take place in Jaipur on December 17 and 18: Report

The auction for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League is likely to take place in Jaipur on December 17 and 18. The T20 tournament is expected to start in the last week of March.

The auction for the upcoming season of Indian Premier League (IPL) is likely to take place in Jaipur on December 17 and 18, a report in The Mumbai Mirror suggests. The IPL auction being a two-day affair comes as a big surprise as this time there will be a small auction as all the teams have the minimum number of players they need. A mega-auction has already taken place earlier this year. The auction process is generally a one-day affair unless it’s a mega-auction.

The report also adds that the franchises are eager to know the venue of the league before the auction takes place. In all likeliness, the tournament will be shifted out of India fully or partially due to the General Elections in 2019. In 2009, the tournament was fully played in South Africa while in 2014, few of the matches were shifted to UAE.

“We wanted the auction to be conducted after the venue is known so that we could have chosen our players accordingly but the BCCI has its own timelines to follow,” a franchise official was quoted as saying by The Mumbai Mirror.

Knowing the venue of the tournament would also help the franchises to ink on the players they would look for at the auction. UAE and South Africa have emerged out as two likely venues to host the tournament.

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that Sunrisers Hyderabad have traded Shikhar Dhawan to Delhi Daredevils in exchange for three players. He had played for the Delhi-based franchise in 2008 before being bought by Mumbai Indians, Deccan Chargers and Sunrisers Hyderabad in later editions of the league.

In other changes, Quinton de Kock has moved to Mumbai Indians while Mandeep Singh has been traded to Kings XI Punjab in exchange for Marcus Stoinis. Mike Hesson has replaced Brad Hodge as Kings XI Punjab's head coach while Virender Sehwag and Venkatesh Pradesh have stepped down from their posts at the franchise.

IPL auction in Jaipur in December; England, Aussie stars to leave mid-way due to WC?

Mumbai: England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Cricket Australia (CA) on Tuesday confirmed that their players will only be available to play in the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 till May 1 next year.

With the ICC Cricket World Cup set to kick off on May 31 in England next year, the IPL will reportedly commence as early as March 29 and go on till the third week of May.

According to a report in Mumbai Mirror, the IPL 2019 auctions will be held on December 17 and 18 in Jaipur, keeping in mind the early start of the season.

However, the franchises first want some clarity on the venue of the tournament as the report goes on to add that it could be moved out of India due to the general elections.

South Africa and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are possible venues for the eight-team tournament.

“We wanted the auction to be conducted after the venue is known so that we could have chosen our players accordingly but the BCCI has its own timelines to follow,” a franchise official said.

“We understand that the venue would be known by then,” another official added.

India will play their first round-robin game against South Africa in Southampton on June 5.

IPL 2019 likely to start early to give India break before World Cup

The IPL could be advanced by a couple of weeks and is likely to start on March 23 to accommodate the Indian team management's request to allow their fast bowlers adequate rest before the World Cup starts on May 30.

India captain and coach Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri are believed to have laid out the need for at least a two-week rest period for their fast bowlers during meetings last month with the Committee of Administrators (CoA) and the board's senior management team. They are also believed to have asked whether key players, including senior fast bowlers, could be rested from the IPL and adequately compensated if so.

These meetings, held in New Delhi and Hyderabad, were also attended by Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane, vice-captains of the ODI and Test side respectively, and selection committee chairman MSK Prasad.

The IPL management, headed by chief operating officer Hemang Amin, is understood to have told the CoA that the Indian team management's request would need the consent of the franchises, which could be hard to come by. This may have in-turn forced the BCCI into considering an early start.

During these meetings, ESPNcricinfo understands that the two-member CoA, comprising Vinod Rai and Diana Edulji, also made it clear to Kohli and Shastri that while India remain the No. 1 Test side, they have been "found wanting" in South Africa and England.

The CoA is understood to be displeased about some of the grievances put forth by the team management pertaining to inadequate facilities at the team hotel and players' partners not travelling with the side. The CoA also apparently didn't take too kindly Shastri's comments about India being the best travelling team. The CoA is understood to have told Shastri that even if India is one of the best teams going around, people should be allowed to judge for themselves.

The BCCI is also exploring the feasibility of hosting IPL 2019 in India, but can only take a final call on this once the dates of the country's seven-phase federal elections are announced by the Central Election Commission. A team has already carried out a recce in South Africa, should the IPL need a plan B. It is likely that a clearer picture will emerge ahead of the player auction in Jaipur on December 18.

Mohammed Kaif, the former India batsman, has joined Delhi Daredevils as their assistant coach. The 37-year-old teams up with head coach Ricky Ponting and James Hopes in the Daredevils' coaching set-up.

"Delhi Daredevils have roped in former Indian batsman Mohammad Kaif as their assistant coach for the upcoming Indian Premier League season," the team announced.

This is Kaif's second such appointment, having worked with Gujarat Lions as their assistant coach in 2017.

"I'm delighted to be part of the Delhi Daredevils and am looking forward to bringing together an exciting group of boys, who are going to make their franchise and country proud," Kaif said. "With the management team's support, I am sure we'll help nurture many of the younger boys in the squad and make this team a force to be reckoned with in the IPL," he added.

Delhi Daredevils' Director Mustafa Ghouse said Kaif's experience and leadership will hold the team in good stead ahead of the IPL next year.

"Kaif brings in huge amounts of experience and a keen understanding of the game to our backroom staff. He's highly admired on the circuit and will be a natural mentor for the youngsters in the team," Ghouse said.

"We are confident that his leadership and guidance will help the team tremendously in the new IPL season."

DD will hope the appointment of Kaif helps the team turn around eleven years of disappointment in the IPL and end their trophy drought. In the latest edition, the Daredevils had ended the tournament in the last place with 10 points from 14 games.

Virat Kohli wants pacers to miss IPL 2019, Rohit Sharma opposes the idea: Report

Virat Kohli wants India's main pacers to miss the next season of the Indian Premier League. However, Rohit Sharma is not in favour of the idea proposed by the skipper.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli has come up with an idea of resting the pacers for the next season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) so that they are fully fit for the World Cup 2019, which starts just a couple of weeks after the conclusion of the T20 league. The idea of the 30-year-old might not impress the franchises, which spent Crores of rupees to attain their (pacers) services. At present Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah are the key bowlers of the Indian team and both were retained by their respective franchises, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians respectively, ahead of the IPL 2018 auction.

During this year's IPL, Bhuvneshwar had to miss a few games due to a back issue. Later, he also missed a few games of the tour of UK and was later ruled out of the Test series against England as he aggravated his back injury by playing the third ODI before Tests.

Jasprit Bumrah, on the other hand, played all 14 games in IPL. In the first T20I game of the series against Ireland, he suffered a broken thumb but returned for the Test series against England and played the last three games after being match-fit. He and Bhuvneshwar were rested for the Test series and first two ODI of the series against West Indies.

While the idea of Kohli is likely to be opposed by IPL franchises, Rohit Sharma, his deputy in limited-overs format and captain of IPL franchises Mumbai Indians, is also not in favour of resting pacers for IPL.

'If Mumbai Indians reach Play Offs or finals and if Bumrah happens to be fit, then I cannot afford to rest him'," Rohit apparently said, as per a report in PTI.

While there has been no official confirmation regarding it, it is unlikely that the pacers will miss IPL due to the fact that franchises have already spent big bucks on them. The next edition of IPL is expected to start in March and end in the mid of May

New Zealand players get clearance for full IPL ahead of 2019 World Cup

The Indian Premier League is expected to conclude shortly before the start of 2019 ICC World Cup in England in May end.

New Zealand Cricket has given clearance to its players to feature for the entire duration of the Indian Premier League (IPL) next year even though the tournament may finish shortly before the 2019 ICC World Cup in England.

IPL is generally held in the month of April while the World Cup is slated to begin in England in May end. Reports suggest that Australian cricket board and the England and Wales Cricket Board might not allow their players to play the full IPL.

However, New Zealand cricket will not do that and as announced by James Wear, GM Commercial, New Zealand Cricket, the board wants its players to get as much experience of playing around the world as possible.

"One of the things New Zealand Cricket has decided is to allow its players to play in the Indian Premier League right till the end of the IPL," Wear said during a special interaction in Mumbai.

"So we are keen to give our guys as much experience playing all around the world as possible so that they get a great experience by playing in the IPL," explained Wear.

Wear further said that New Zealand cricket is keen of having its players playing in the cash-rich T20 league in India.

"Last season we had 11 players playing in there (IPL), which was great for us and we are keen to continue that," added Wear.

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson, pacers Tim Southee, Adam Milne, Trent Boult and Mitchell Mclenaghan regularly feature in the cash-rich T20 league.

Some reports also suggest that BCCI is looking to prepone the IPL keeping the World Cup in mind and is looking for possibilities to organise the tournament from the end of March.

Meanwhile, New Zealand Cricket is preparing to host the Indian team in the upcoming five-match ODI and three-match Twenty20 International series. The first ODI is to be held at Napier on January 23.

"We are working with Star (Sports) to make sure that the timings work as well as possible for the Indian audience," informed Wear, adding the men's T20I matches are scheduled to begin at 12:30 pm IST.
