Leave Owaisi’s AIMIM, We'll Support You: BJP Offer to KCR 48 Hours Before Telangana Election Results

Speaking to News18, Telangana BJP chief K Laxman said no government can be formed in Telangana without the saffron party’s support.

Hyderabad: Hinting that it is open to extending post-poll support to TRS leader K Chandrashekar Rao in Telangana, the BJP on Sunday asked the caretaker CM to ditch Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM first.

Speaking to News18, Telangana BJP chief K Laxman said no government can be formed in Telangana without the saffron party’s support.

“The TRS has to make its stand clear. If the TRS aligns with Majlis (AIMIM), there is no question of the BJP extending support to it. BJP will support non-Congress, non-Majlis party. The final decision will be taken by Amit Shah and Narendra Modi, but no party will get clear majority in Telangana,” Laxman said.

The offer is likely to bolster Congress and TDP’s claim of the TRS being a ‘B-team’ of the BJP. The saffron party had also made a similar charge against KCR, accusing him of colluding with the ‘Mahakutami’ or grand alliance of the Congress and TDP.

Owaisi had earlier said that his party would win the seats that fall in Hyderabad, while the government would be formed by KCR again. He, however, said his party would not join the government.

The exit polls have been almost unanimous in predicting that KCR’s gamble of advancing the assembly polls will pay off and he will retain power. Republic TV and Times Now forecast that his party would win 50-65 and 66 seats in the 119-member assembly. TV9 Telugu and India Today forecast a tally between 75-85 and 75-91 for the ruling party respectively. Some exit polls saw a tighter battle between the TRS and the Congress-TDP combine.

The counting of votes would be taken up on December 11.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Will support TRS if it seeks our support publicly: BJP
  • Congress claimed TRS was always BJP's second option in Telangana
  • Results of the assembly election will be announced on December 11

Just 48 hours for election results, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday said that it is ready to extend support to K Chandrashekar Rao's Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) if they ditch Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM.

"We will support TRS if it drops AIMIM and seeks our support publicly," said BJP state president K Laxman. "No party can form the government here [Telangana] without our support," he said.

Reacting on the Congress's claim that TRS was always "BJP's team B", the state chief said, "Yes, we fought against the corrupt rule and family rule of TRS, but we will support them if we don't get the numbers."

The Congress in the morning had claimed that TRS was always the second option for BJP which is why Prime Minister Narendra Modi never said anything against Chandrashekar Rao and TRS during the election campaign.

The suggestion of post-poll alliance comes after exit polls show caretaker CM KCR-led TRS storming back to power with an impressive margin in Telangana.

India Today Axis My India exit poll predicts that KCR is likely to win 79 to 91 seats in the 119-member house. The alliance between the Congress and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu's Telegu Desam Party (TDP) is expected to win just 21-33 seats in the Telangana assembly election, voting for which was held on December 7.

However, the BJP is projected to get just one to three seats, while the AIMIM will win anything between four and seven seats.

This is the first assembly election that the state is facing after it was carved out of Andhra Pradesh in 2014. The result will be announced on December 11.
