Amaravati: “Every Temptation comes with a choice”

The morning coffee shows on Telugu News channels, have only one topic on whether YS Jagan made a unwarranted mistake by shaking hands with KCR to help him to implement his “Return Gift” hyperbole, whose sole aim is to defeat Chandrababu Naidu.

The USP of politics in Andhra Pradesh is that it is ever changing and entertaining. Every day, like the suspense thrillers scripted by Alfred Hitchcock, offers an interesting turn and an exciting twist.

One of those interesting turns and the exciting twists came when the once upon a time bitter rivals KCR and YS Jagan agreed ‘in principle” to co-ordinate with each other as part of a ‘National Front” mission of KCR ahead of the 2019 elections,

….. Or, more precisely as part of KCR’s “Return Gift” politics to work for the defeat of Chnadrababu Naidu(CBN) in AP.

Not so long time ago in the past, during the peak of Telangana movement YS jagan was labeled as a “Traitor” of Telangana and was treated as a symbol of “Anti-Telangana” to be pelted stones at, as and when he made attempts to enter Telangana by the TRS and its leadership.

For an average layman it might appear as coming together of two powerful regional leaders ahead of 2019 elections in a move that complicates CBN’s push for a second term in office.

Ever since both the leaders decided to co-ordinate with each other in both the Telugu states ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the focus has been on whether “Jagan Had made a right move” in shaking hands with KCR, a symbol of “Anti-Andhra” interests, with the sole aim of defeating CBN.

Most of the political experts began to feel that by saying “Yes” to KCR, Jagan “Erred” and thereby committed a cardinal sin that would help CBN to gain much needed reason to turn the electoral narrative in his favour, which has been gradually slipping from his grip.

Experts believe that it is going to be huge challenge for YS Jagan to effectively explain the AP voters on why he is KCR’s support, as this coordination is not a people oriented endeavour, and whose only aim is to defeat CBN.

People know both the leaders(KCR and Jagan) have in the past bitterly opposed each other and their coming together now is purely for electoral purposes without a definite development agenda, particularly, when KCR is seen as a symbol of “Anti-Andhra” interests.

Analysts feel that by shaking hands with KCR, who carries a negative perception among the people of AP, Jagan has given CBN a much needed breathing space to turn the tables on him.

As expected, CBN and his propaganda machine have launched a concerted campaign to discredit Jagan for seeking KCR’s support and agreeing in principle to work together.

Given the CBN’s ability to build an indestructible belief among the gullible Andhra Public to convince them that he alone could deliver things for them given his vast political administration experience in the state( read 40 years Industry), the sudden bonhomie between Jagan and anti-Andhra forces could be a gift from the blue.

Moreover, the anti-bifurcation narrative diligently promoted by him still holds sway on the state electorate, which might now help him, due to the voluntary chance given to him by Jagan, to build a narrative of an Andhra self-respect sentimental narrative against the BJP-led Centre to which both KCR and Jagan are alleged to be tacit allies.

Regardless of the propaganda by TDP to discredit Jagan on his overtures with KCR, Jagan might find it tough to answer several questions, as the TDP propaganda machinery builds the election narrative as the contest between “Us”( Andhras) vs. “Them”(Anti-Andhra forces).

The questions might include on what is the reason for alliance with TRS, “Anti-Andhra Forces” and how will Jagan ensure special status for Andhra by partnering with a party that is against it?

If such narrative gets its traction with the people, it would be very counterproductive for Jagan as the people of Andhra will take into consideration KCR’s stand on issues like special status, water sharing agreements and irrigation projects, etc.

The negative perception of the people of AP on KCR for his stand affecting the interests of the state may, in turn, create room for CBN to reap electoral benefits to tide over the possible anti-incumbency by diverting the people's anger at the KCR and Jagan duo.

On the other hand, Pawan Kalyan may warm up to the development and might leave no stone unturned to build a similar “Andhra Self-respect” narrative to make things more difficult for Jagan.

Pawan has been looking for the issues to make a mark of his own and Jagan’s so called “anti-Andhra” move might force him to get closer to CBN.

As Pawan Kalyan is not in a position to battle it out on his own, the coming together of KCR and Jagan might make him move closer to CBN and work, at least, in tacit understanding with him to help him (CBN) to build an “Andhra Self-Respect” narrative to dent the prospects of YSRCP.

Similarly, the propaganda of CBN describing Jagan as “Second KCR” and “Third Modi” has the potential for the people of AP to perceive YSRCP as “B” team of Modi, since; they feel that BJP had betrayed them on the promises under AP State Reorganization Act, 2014.

By triggering debates over conspiracy theories and building an emotional war, CBN might successfully get several objectives realized.

With this unwarranted move Jagan might find it extremely difficult to counter the likely narrative to be built by CBN.

KCR, on the other hand must realize that CBN is no Uttam Kumar Reddy or listless TPCC leadership and Andhra is no Telangana.

Hence, it would be better for him to stop hyping and boasting on his “Retrun Gift” politics.

Instead, it would appropriate for him to innovate a different political theory to help Jagan, if his intention is to teach CBN a lesson rather than forge clandestine deals with Jagan and giving an opportunity for a seasoned politician like CBN to float counter-conspiracy theories to construct a formidable emotional narrative as a smoke screen to cover his failures.

In the final analysis of the experts, the sudden bonhomie between Jagan and KCR has the potential to help CBN to ignite regional sentiments in Andhra, similar to what KCR did in the recent Telangana Assembly polls for political gains.

Thus, the attempts of TRS may, in fact, be aimed at helping YSRCP to gain in Andhra, but they may boomerang on Jagan and ultimately help Naidu to overcome anti-incumbency.

Hence, the big question is “By saying yes to KCR, has Jagan erred” to pursue a negative agenda of mere preventing CBN to have another term?..

Well, it’s a conjecture of time…..For now one can only sit and enjoy the interesting turns and exciting twists that are USP of AP politics.
