how come lenders / finacial institutes operate on this basis? Its not insurance, its Mortgage, so the money still owed, they'll claim from the estate left behind

There is a sperate insurance for your mortgage in UK 
if the main borrower deceased ayithe,  banks will collect money from Insurance company,  banks wont charge from the family members or handover the property. 
If there is no insurance, bank will take over the property. but mana kauurthi gallu 20£ bokka deniki ani kattru
