Hyderabad: Hyderabad has attracted another major investment as French aerospace company Safran Aircraft Engines announces plans to set up a green-field unit to make parts for the LEAP turbofan engine from CFM International.

During a visit to India for the Aero India Show, Philippe Petitcolin, CEO of Safran, and K Chandrashekar Rao, Chief Minister of Telangana announced that Safran Aircraft Engines would build a new plant in Hyderabad. Safran will invest 36 million euros (about Rs 290 crore) in this new plant, which will cover 13,000 square meters (140,400 sq ft), including 8,000 square meters (86,400 sq ft) of workshops, in the Special Economic Zone of GMR near the airport.

Construction is likely to start by June 2019 with production of the first parts by early 2020. The plant will have about 50 employees by the end of 2019 to launch operations, and will eventually have a workforce of 300. The employees will be trained through a full-fledged training programme. The plant will make real-time monitoring of production parameters and latest integrated inspection methods.

“We’re delighted to open a new chapter in our long history with the Indian aerospace industry,” said Philippe Petitcolin, CEO of Safran. Aerospace continues to be a significant driver of India’s growth, and we want to fully support this dynamic by bolstering our investments and training programs in the country.”

“We are delighted that Safran has selected Hyderabad to establish its Aircraft Engine manufacturing plant, thus joining the league of other global OEMs who are already manufacturing and exporting from Telangana”, said K Chandrashekar Rao, Chief Minister of Telangana.

“Aerospace is a focus industrial sector for Telangana and the State government is providing maximum support to encourage the industry,” he added.

LEAP Engine Production

By 2023, the plant will be able to deliver 15,000 parts per year to support the LEAP’s sustained production rate. CFM is set to deliver 1,800 engines in 2019, rising to 2,000 starting next year. With more than 17,000 orders and commitments recorded to date, the LEAP is the fastest selling engine.

The new-generation LEAP entered service in 2016 and has now passed the mark of 3 million flight-hours. It already powers more than 700 Airbus A320neo and Boeing 737 MAX commercial airliners, including 54 operated by Indian airlines.

According to Olivier Andriès, CEO of Safran Aircraft Engines, “Locating this new plant in India reflects our strategy of developing a global supply chain to support the fast-paced ramp-up in LEAP production. It is essential for us to expand our production sources, both in-house and externally, to continue to meet commitments to our customers, the aircraft manufacturers.”

Safran which has been operating in India for almost 65 years has over 600 employees at seven companies which provide design, production and support services for aerospace and defense, plus a maintenance training centre in Hyderabad for CFM engines. Opened in 2010, this centre can train more than 500 technicians a year.

Safran Electrical Plant

Safran last year announced in 2018 the construction of a Safran Electrical & Power factory to produce LEAP engines harnesses and Rafale fighter electrical wiring interconnections systems in Hyderabad.

Also located in the Special Economic Zone in Hyderabad, this 4,000 sq-meter facility will be ready by mid-2019 and will employ 250 people. Operations have already started in a temporary building with 33 employees, 19 of whom are technicians identified from the State of Telangana and trained through partnership between Telangana Academy of Skill and Knowledge (TASK) and Safran Electrical & Power.

Component manufacturing is a big thing...and ie sector la Telangana bagane encourage chestundi...

ancillery units and component manufacturing can actually drive growth by ten folds at macro level.

Investment will be low, risk will be low, they need skilled work force wnhancing training and skill development and mostly these units influence services at local level.
