Changes in schedule and match-timings planned for IPL 2020

Since the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL), many day games have usually been scheduled during the double-headers, and the night-matches have often stretched past midnight due to rain delays or a tie-breaker.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is now aiming to make few changes in such regularities.

The next season of the IPL could see some serious changes in schedule and match-timings. According to a report in the Indian Express, the BCCI is currently working on a plan to schedule only one game on a single day in the tournament. Also, there is a possibility of a few double-headers during the weekends.

The less number of double-headers would mean that the fans could see a longer IPL in 2020. The BCCI is mulling overextending the tournament to 60 days, as opposed to the 45-day window currently.

The BCCI is also keen to have a 7 pm (IST) start of the night-matches. There have been concerns from many former cricketers, including legendary Sunil Gavaskar over late finishes in the T20 matches, and the IPL Governing Council did prepone the play-offs by 30 minutes in the 2019 edition.

“There is a plan in place of playing more games at night. If it is passed, each team will have to play only one game in the afternoon. Teams who play in the north face heatwaves and conditions get more difficult. There is a plan of using all 60 days instead of wrapping up the IPL in 45 days. The IPL GC has to approve it,” a source from the board was quoted as saying by Indian Express.

The IPL 2020 is most likely to start on April 1 and will continue till May 30. The auction for the upcoming edition will take place on December 19 in Kolkata.

It has also been reported that the opening ceremony will not be held on the same day as the opening match of the tournament.

BCCI plans game-changer ‘Power Player’ in IPL: Report

Speaking to IANS, a senior BCCI official said that the concept has already been approved, but will be discussed further in the IPL Governing Council meeting that will take place at the BCCI HQ in Mumbai on Tuesday.

If the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revolutionised T20 cricket by introducing the Indian Premier League (IPL), they are looking to take it one step further by bringing in the concept of Power Player in the next edition of the cash-rich league. Teams will be allowed to substitute a player at the fall of a wicket or at the end of an over at any point in the game.

Speaking to IANS, a senior BCCI official said that the concept has already been approved, but will be discussed further in the IPL Governing Council meeting that will take place at the BCCI HQ in Mumbai on Tuesday.

“We are looking at a scenario where a team will not name the Playing XI. They will announce the 15 and a player can be substituted at either the fall of a wicket or at the end of the over at any point in the game. While we are looking to introduce it in the IPL, trying the concept first in the upcoming Mushtaq Ali Trophy could be the ideal way forward,” the official said.

Explaining how the idea will actually change the game, the official said the concept has the capacity to change match situations and induce out-of-the-box thinking and strategising from the two teams and engage even the fans further.

“Imagine you need 20 runs off the last six balls and you have Andre Russell sitting in the dug-out as he wasn’t a hundred percent and wasn’t part of the original XI. But now, he can just walk in and go slam-bang and win you the game.

“Similarly, say you need to defend six runs off the last over and you have someone like a Jasprit Bumrah sitting in the dug-out. So, what does the captain do? Brings in Bumrah at the end of the 19th over and there you go. The concept has the potential to change the game,” the official said.

Apart from deliberating on this concept at the IPL GC on Tuesday, the members will also review the 2019 edition of the cash-rich league. The team will also discuss how to go about making the next edition of the league bigger and better when it comes to not just the game, but also fan engagement.

15 players instead of 11 per team in IPL 2020? BCCI's 'Power Player' could change T20 cricket forever

If the BCCI have their way, next year's IPL could see teams having roll-over substitutes and could bring in a 'Power Player' as and when the situation demands.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • IPL 2020 could see teams naming 15 players at the start of every match instead of 11
  • A 'Power Player' can be used as a substitute for another if the situation demands decisive action
  • The move, if carried forward, will surely revolutionize T20 cricket

Ravichandran Ashwin traded to Delhi Capitals

Ravichandran Ashwin's move to Delhi Capitals has been finalised, Kings XI Punjab co-owner Ness Wadia confirmed on Thursday (November 7). According to PTI, Delhi Capitals have offered KXIP left-arm spinner J Suchith and an additional sum of INR 1.5 crores as part of the exchange. Ashwin, 33, will get INR 7.6 crores, his auction value from the IPL 2018 auction. The deal is subject to ratification by the IPL Governing Council.

"Everyone is happy with this deal. We are happy, Ashwin is happy and Delhi is happy. We were in talks with three teams but have finally come to this conclusion. We wish Ashwin the very best," Wadia told PTI.

Ashwin led KXIP for two seasons and amicably decided to part ways from the franchise. "We [Ashwin and KXIP] have amicably come to a conclusion that we should part ways," Wadia had said earlier in the day.

The 33-year-old spinner has been among the top performers in the IPL since making his debut in 2009, having snared 125 wickets from 139 games at an excellent economy rate of 6.79. He was an integral part of the Chennai Super Kings side that won back-to-back titles in 2010 and 2011.

As captain, Ashwin was unable to change the fortunes of KXIP, one of the three original teams still to win an IPL. The team failed to make it to the playoffs in both seasons despite a few promising performances. Opener KL Rahul will now be among the frontrunners to be named captain of the franchise.

The IPL transfer window closes next week, on November 14, and more announcements of the trade-offs are likely to be made before that.

Special umpire to monitor no-balls likely in IPL 2020

the-2020-edition-of-the-ipl-co.jpg

The 2020 edition of the IPL could have a special umpire just to monitor no-balls. The idea was floated and accepted well at a meeting of the IPL Governing Council, chaired by former India batsman Brijesh Patel, at the BCCI head quarters on Tuesday (November 5). It's still not clear, though, if that 'special umpire' would be the third or fourth umpire, or a new addition in the umpiring team altogether.

The need for this new rule seems to have been instigated by a number of cases in the last IPL when the umpires didn't give genuine no balls, costing teams matches from a crucial position. A primary case was India and Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli coming down heavily on umpire S Ravi after the final delivery of their match against the Mumbai Indians, bowled by pacer Lasith Malinga, turned out to be 'no-ball' which was not awarded to the losing team.

"We are playing at the IPL level. It's not club level, the umpires should have their eyes open. That was a big no-ball," a livid Kohli had said at the post-match presentation ceremony. Even Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma was critical of the standard of umpiring during the match.

"During the next IPL, you may see another umpire, apart from the regular umpires just to 'observe' the no-balls. The concept sounds weird, but this was among the issues discussed in the first IPL Governing Council meeting which was held here," a senior GC member told reporters after the meeting.

"We want to use the technology. We are having another umpire for only observing no-balls. There will be an umpire, who will be focused on no-balls only. He may not be third or fourth umpire," he said.

The innovative concept of having such umpires might be tried during the domestic tournaments before a final call will be taken on it.
