India head coach announcement likely at 7 PM after CAC interviews in Mumbai

Kapil Dev along with the other members of the CAC -- Anshuman Gaekwad and Shantha Rangaswamy-- will be interviewing the India head coach candidates. The new coach will be announced in the evening, subject to completion of the formal process.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • BCCI will be holding a press conference at 7 PM on Friday to announce India head coach
  • Kapil Dev-led Cricket Advisory Committee will be interviewing the candidates
  • Earlier, BCCI had shortlisted 6 candidates for the job

The new head coach of the Indian cricket team is likely to be announced at 7 PM in a press conference that will be attended by Kapil Dev-led Cricket Advisory Committee on Friday in Mumbai, India Today can confirm.

Kapil Dev along with the other members of the CAC -- Anshuman Gaekwad and Shantha Rangaswamy will attend the press conference. The new coach will be announced in the evening, subject to completion of the formal process.

The BCCI shortlisted 6 candidates for the coveted position as Ravi Shastri's contract ended after India's World Cup 2019 campaign. Shastri along with other support staff, Bharat Arun, Sanjay Bangar and R Sridhar were given 45-day contract extensions.

The interview process to appoint the head coach of the men's cricket team began at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) headquarters. Former India all-rounder Robin Singh was the first one to appear for the interview.

Other than Robin Singh, Lalchand Rajput and Mike Hesson will be present in person for the interview while Tom Moody, Phil Simmons and Ravi Shastri will be interviewed on Skype.

New coach to be handed 2-year contract

The newly-appointed head coach on Friday will reportedly be handed 2 year contracts until the T20 World Cup in 2021. The batting, bowling and the fielding coaches who are set to be selected by MSK Prasad-led senior selection committee will also be given 2-year contracts.

Ravi Shastri is the overwhelming favourite to retain his job, considering the amount of success Team India have had in the last 2 years. Apart from winning historic series in South Africa (ODIs) and Australia (ODIs and Tests), India's World Cup 2019 performance was impressive until the semi-final wherein they were knocked out by New Zealand.

Notably, India captain Virat Kohli had said the team would be happy if Ravi Shastri continues as head coach.

"The CAC hasn't contacted me yet. If they want my opinion, I'll go and speak to them. With Ravi Bhai, we share a great camaraderie, and will definitely be very happy if he continues. But I haven't been contacted," Kohli had said before Team India left to the US for their tour of West Indies.

Stressing Kohli's comments will not influence the CAC, its member Anshuman Gaekwad said: "The captain can say anything. It doesn't bother us. We are a committee. That's his opinion and the BCCI takes a note of it, not us."

Then team director, Ravi Shastri was appointed as head coach on July 2017 by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), comprising Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar.

The BCCI selection panel has shortlisted former England pacer Darren Gough and UK-based tactical fast bowling coach Steffan Jones, along with five other Indian candidates, for the bowling coach role.

The full list comprises former India internationals Subroto Banerjee, Amit Bhandari, Paras Mhambrey, Venkatesh Prasad and Sunil Joshi.

Incumbent bowling coach Bharat Arun is an automatic entry in the list.

The interviews for the bowling coach role will be held at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai on August 19. Outstation candidates have the option of presenting their study on Skype.

The time limit for the presentation is 20 minutes or more.

Being a known face in the National Cricket Academy circle, Banerjee's stakes will be high along with Mhambrey, who has been travelling with the India U-19 and A team for a while.

Gough is a high-profile name in the fray and after England's World Cup triumph, Jones can raise his collar a little bit for he trained Jofra Archer among many other fast bowlers.

Joshi -- who has been with Bangladesh --brings in a lot of experience along with Prasad, who has served as a bowling coach in the past.
