Critics immediately slammed the decision to fete the first lady, claiming she has failed to speak out against President Donald Trump’s frequent tweets mocking, name calling and denigrating his opponents.

In September, #BeBest trended on Twitter after the first lady remained silent when her husband mocked global teen climate change activist Greta Thunberg on Twitter.

Kyra Kinnaman, a 2015 graduate of PBAU, was so upset about PBAU’s decision to present the first lady with the award that she wrote a letter, posted it to her social media accounts and sent it to The Palm Beach Post. Among her complaints, Kinnaman also referred to the first lady’s silence about the president’s policy of separating families at the U.S.-Mexico borders.

“I also hope that others add to this discussion, because selecting Trump as the 2020 Woman of Distinction is a misguided, embarrassing choice at best and a calculated, amoral choice at worst,” Kinnaman wrote, adding that the negative press would affect the school’s reputation.

Kinnaman said former classmates contacted her after reading her letter. They, too, were frustrated with the decision.PBAU is a Christian College located on the intracoastal waterway in West Palm Beach. It is affiliated with Family Church, the conservative, Baptist-affiliated church bordering the school.
