ilaaa kaadhu gani .. simple Q

401k ki fidelity lo acct hain.. meeru denilo invest chesthunnaaruuuu  .. entha rate of return vasthundhi yearly... 401k lo meeru lekapothe lite le

If you want to follow the simple route , invest what the company matches , whether is 4% or 6% or 8% etc

You have to see that your contribution does not exceed the yearly limit for 401k which is 19,500 for 2020

You can invest up to 19,500 with out company matching too , you simply save tax on that money (At the cost of that money being locked until you are 59 1/2 years etc)

If you need to withdraw the amount before you are 59 1/2 years then the amount will be taxed along with a 10% penalty

Investment return typically depends on how your 401k is invested , most companies allow you to choose percentages you can invest like 80% stocks , 20% bonds or even a selection of stocks such as international , large cap etc.

You can also contribute after tax money for Roth accounts. Read up on them.

Some 401k accounts may allow you to withdraw money for mortgage loan etc.If you are staying here in us for long term , investing in 401k (especially when there is a company match) is very wise as you are getting free money + growth over the years , the growth compounds to thousands of dollars in the long run

Good luck

Long-term if you are planning to settle in India, invest in India however if you are planning to settle here, invest here as we never know how the ruppee going to change over time. Also one thing I want to clarify about peddayanna's statement is that the 19500 limit doesn't include company matching. What I mean is if a company provides 401k account, an individual person can contribute a total of up to 19500 not including the company match. Of course there is a limit of how much percentage of your income you can put in your 401k.
