Tesla has reduced the price of the Model Y starting price below $50,000, and it has updated the Performance version.

As a surprise move today, Tesla is reducing the price of the Model Y, the automaker’s latest vehicle by $3,000 — a significant price drop for a vehicle that came to market only a few months ago.

Since its launch, Model Y has only been offered in two versions: Long Range Dual Motor AWD and Performance.

However, the Performance version was available with or without a “Performance Package” that adds several features:

  • Increased top speed from 145mph to 155mph
  • 21’’ Überturbine Wheels
  • Performance Brakes
  • Lowered suspension
  • Aluminum alloy pedals

With the update today, Tesla is now making the package standard on Model Y Performance orders — now starting just below $60,000:

This new configuration is in line with what Tesla did with the Model 3 Performance version.

For the base version, the Model Y Long Range Dual Motor, Tesla is reducing the price to $49,990.

It’s a $3,000 price drop from the $52,990 price that the base version of the electric SUV had since its launch in March.

Now the same version of the Model 3 is only $3,000 less expensive than the Model Y, which was originally supposed to be about $5,000 more expensive than the smaller Model 3 depending on the configuration.

Last quarter, Tesla also decreased Model 3 prices across the lineup.

The automaker didn’t explain why it was reducing the price of its new electric SUV today.

Tesla just gave would-be Model Y buyers an unexpected treat: a sudden price drop. Electrek has discovered that Tesla lowered the cost of a Long Range AWD variant by $3,000 to $49,990 before taxes and incentives. The electric crossover still isn’t a trivial purchase at that price, but it might be easier to justify if the earlier price was just a little too hard to swallow.

There are perks if you’re willing to spend more, too. The Performance trim (priced at $59,990) now includes the previously optional Performance Package as standard. That nets you a higher 155MPH top speed, 21-inch wheels, upgraded brakes, a lowered suspension and aluminum alloy pedals. You will take a hit in range due to those wheels, down from 316 miles on the Long Range to 291 miles, but this saves you money if you were already set on getting a maxed-out Model Y.

We’ve asked Tesla for comment. A cut like this makes sense, though. Tesla has a habit of reducing prices as production and economies of scale improve, and the COVID-19 pandemic has had a disastrous effect on car sales — even if EVs represent a rare bright spot. Cuts like this, as well as earlier price drops for the Model S and Model X, could keep Model Y sales humming even as the pandemic continues and the car’s initial novelty wears off.

I don’t know what you mean ...base model ( standard range )is available it cost 38000... if it not listed in website meaning it’s not available.. it tesla strategy to sell long range more to get more margins ...if you go to dealer and say base model they will give quote to standard range  single moter not long range..

To be honest, it is not a wise idea to pay 38k and buy a single motor low range. $50k is a not bad deal at all. There is no point for Tesla to market base model for a version that competes to Audi Sports Q5 or BMW X5 segments.
