There is also a green party.

Someone or the other always puts in their name. But they do not usually get any news coverage.

Countries like India that comprise diverse states (52 official languages), will have more parties due to local influence. But US has traditionally strived upon two party system for lack of takers for third parties.

In US also we have Green Party and Liberatarian Party......... in 2016.......... together they polled 5% of total vote.

2016 lo Tatha win ayyindi kooda because of this split in Vote............ Hillary lost 3 states(Michigan, PA and Wisconsin) with a margin of less than 50K votes(Less than 1% vote)............ Green party polled more than 4% in these states.

India lo Third Front/CPI/CPM just naam ke vaaste leputaru Elections mundara............. In reality India is also a 2 party Alliance system.

Third Front can never form government without support of either BJP or Congress.......... BJP & Congress together control more than 300 seats without any third party........... 2/3 of parliament.

Only one big drawback with electoral college system is, if you win majority vote in any state, you get all the seats within the state. From that point of view, Indian election system is much better.

OTOH, if each voting district/seat is polled and counted by itself as a seat, I think rural US will pick the president every time. Urban cities would not have a great say in the outcome.

Why? Seat allocation would be based on population. There would be more local seats in urban areas.

See what made it possible for Trump to be elected.

Population density criteria.

I am talking about setting up based on population rather than the current electoral college system. The boundaries will be redrawn according to the population. So rural seats would be over large areas. Rural representation would be less that way.

If and when kada. Hypothetical scenario. I think we are several years away from restructuring electoral college. As long as those demographics support one side, it will stay a partisan issue.

USA is United States of America cuz all these 50 states formed a country. Its a federal system where each states has its own rights and considered equal at federal level even thought they have different population density. With electoral college, its state rather than the people of whole country who decides the president.  Without electoral college, the urban areas in both costs decide the president. Electoral college basically helps the rural population by giving them weightage.
