Reports: IPL 2021 auction likely in February; India first-choice as hosts for upcoming edition

It’s been learned that the trading window has been opened after the meeting and the teams have been asked to release players by January 21.

The Board of Control for Cricket India (BCCI) has, pretty much, been on their toes, scratching their heads for the resumption of domestic cricket in the country that includes the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL). India remains as the first-choice hosts of the T20 tournament, but the situation in the country regarding the COVID-19 pandemic isn’t quite under control yet.

Hence, the BCCI is open to moving the tournament to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) if need be. The previous edition took place in the Gulf Country from September 19 to November 10. The T20 event was set to take place in the month of March but had to be postponed by nearly six months because of the coronavirus outbreak that rocked the world severely.

IPL 2021 mini-auction likely on February 11

As per reports, the IPL governing council met on Monday, January 4 to make further decisions on the 2021 IPL. It’s been learned that the trading window has been opened after the meeting and the teams have been asked to release players by January 21. If reports are to be believed, a mini-auction is set to be held in the second week of February, mostly around February 11.

Earlier, reports of BCCI conduction a full-fledged action were doing the rounds. But due to time constraints, a mini-auction is most likely to take place. However, the upcoming edition of the IPL depends a lot on the 2021 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, scheduled to begin on January 10.

“How we approach the next IPL is dependent on how the Mushtaq Ali plays out,” a BCCI member was quoted as saying in Mumbai Mirror. The SMAT marks the return of domestic cricket in India. The likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh Raina, and Suryakumar Yadav among others are set to take part.

The games will be played at six venues, namely Chennai, Indore, Baroda, Bangalore, Kolkata, Mumbai. The knockout matches will be held in Ahmedabad. The players also have a chance to impress the selectors by playing well in the tournament.

In the previous edition of the league, Devdutt Padikkal impressed after which Royal Challengers Bangalore called him up. As far as the IPL is concerned, Mumbai Indians, led by Rohit Sharma, are the defending champions, having won the title five times.

Pravin Amre joins Delhi Capitals as assistant coach

Amre, who served as the franchise's head talent scout between 2014-2019, will join the existing coaching staff, headed by Ricky Ponting

Former India cricketer Pravin Amre has joined Delhi Capitals as assistant coach for the upcoming two seasons of the Indian Premier League, the team announced on Wednesday.

The 52-year-old Amre, who served as the franchise's head talent scout between 2014-2019, will join the existing coaching staff, headed by Ricky Ponting.

"I am grateful to the Delhi Capitals management for having me on board. With the team having reached its very first IPL final in 2020, this is certainly an exciting time to be back there. I look forward to working with Ricky again, and all the players," Amre was quoted as saying in a press release.

"I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Pravin Amre back to the Delhi Capitals side," said CEO Dhiraj Malhotra, on the latest development.

"Ours is a team with an Indian core, and that thought process applies to our coaching staff as well.

"Few coaches know the domestic cricket scene in India as thoroughly as Amre does. He has been instrumental in getting the likes of Shreyas, Rishabh and Prithvi to our franchise, and his experience will once again be extremely valuable for us. We are delighted to have him on board." Amre, who played 11 Tests and 37 ODIs for India, has had a prolific run in domestic cricket as a player and coach.

He coached Mumbai to three Ranji Trophy titles, and has also worked as a personal coach with several India internationals.

Rajasthan Royals mull releasing Steven Smith

His weak impact as a leader and batsman featured prominently in franchise's 2020 season review, ESPNcricinfo understands

Story Image

Rajasthan Royals are likely to release their captain and premier batsman Steven Smith ahead of the 2021 IPL auction. The Royals will take a final call shortly, before submitting the final list of retained players, the deadline for which the IPL has told franchises is January 20.

ESPNcricinfo understands one of the key reasons behind considering releasing Smith is his middling form in the 2020 IPL, where the Royals finished last in the eight-team league. Smith's weak impact as a leader and batsman featured prominently in the 2020 season review conducted by the franchise. Smith played all the 14 league matches, scoring 311 runs at a strike rate of 131, including three half-centuries.

It is understood the franchise management was keen for the Royals to be more consistent in contention for the playoffs. Having won the IPL in the inaugural season in 2008, the Royals made the playoffs in 2013, 2015 and then in 2018. Smith's lack of impact remained a talking point throughout IPL 2020 as he changed his batting position more than once: he started as an opener before moving to the middle-order.

Ahead of the 2018 auction, Smith was the only player to be retained by the Royals, for INR 12.5 crore (about USD 1.953 million then). In 2018 the Royals started afresh returning from a two-year suspension and appointed Smith as the captain. However, Smith stepped down from the position in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa ahead of the IPL.

But in 2019, after a faltering start to the IPL campaign, the franchise handed the captaincy back to Smith saying it was looking for a "fresh approach" while sacking Ajinkya Rahane, who had lead the franchise to the playoffs in 2018.

The Royals would need to appoint a new captain in case Smith is released. One clear frontrunner within the existing squad is Indian batsman-wicketkeeper Sanju Samson, one of the impact players for the franchise in IPL 2020. On Monday, Samson led Kerala in their first match of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Samson, who was recently part of white-ball leg of the Australian tour, was bought by the Royals in the 2018 auction for INR 8 crore (about USD 1.25 million then). The key reason for Samson getting picked for the Australian tour was his success in the IPL where he was the Royals' highest run-scorer, making 375 runs at a strike rate of nearly 159, with three fifties. Samson was also part of the Royals leadership group comprising Smith, head coach Andrew McDonald, Jos Buttler, and Ben Stokes.

It is understood that despite both Buttler and Stokes having more weightage in terms of experience and impact, the franchise is not keen on the English pair taking charge as a captain, keeping their availability through the upcoming IPL season in mind. In the past, England players have arrived later or left early to and from the IPL, which usually clashes with the beginning of the English summer.

IPL 2021 auction likely on February 11

January 20 last date to submit list of retained players

The 2021 IPL auction is likely to be held on February 11. The IPL has also set January 20 as the deadline for the eight franchises to submit the lists of retained and released players.

Those were two of the key decisions taken by the IPL Governing Council which met virtually on Monday. The dates and venue(s) haven't been finalised yet for the 2021 edition which the BCCI recently decided would remain an eight-team event.

The venue for the auction, which will be a day-long event, has not been finalised yet either. However, it will take place in the short break between the first and the second Test of the India-England Test series which begins in February. The first two Tests of the England series are scheduled in Chennai with the first match to be played between February 5-9. The second Test will run from 13th to 17th.

IPL in India? Not yet certain

It is understood the three-person panel, which is headed by former India batsman Brijesh Patel and also has former India left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha as a member, deliberated on the various options for the venue. With the pandemic continuing to surge in India, the Governing Council is understood to have retained the UAE as one of the options.

With the pandemic throwing up several challenges regularly, the IPL remains uncertain about whether to conduct matches on a home-and-away basis which would mean having a minimum of eight venues. The other alternative, which was also discussed last year before moving the tournament to the UAE, is to organise the tournament at few venues which would entail minimal travel for teams.

The balance purse

Although the franchises would want the IPL to firm up the tournament venue, they are currently busy finalising the list of players they would want to retain and release. That is the first step to prepare ahead of the auction which for several teams this time would be more about plugging holes than making wholesale changes.

Like every year the IPL is likely to enhance the auction purse by INR 3 crore. Incidentally, the Chennai Super Kings, who had glaring holes and finished joint-last on points in IPL 2020, had the smallest purse after the last auction.

They had just 0.15 crore left in their purse while the Kings XI Punjab had the largest balance of INR 16.5 crore. Here's the balance purse for the rest of the teams: Rajasthan Royals (14.75 crore), Sunrisers Hyderabad (10.1 crore), Delhi Capitals (9 crore), Kolkata Knight Riders (8.5 crore), Royal Challengers Bangalore (6.4 crore), and Mumbai Indians (1.95 crore).

IPL 2021 auction: Three cricketers Rajasthan Royals are likely to release

Rajasthan Royals endured a terrible IPL 2020 season where they ended at the last position in the points table. Despite boasting of a terrific overseas quota of players that had the likes of Steve Smith, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, and Jofra Archer, RR couldn’t shine well in the season. They never seemed to form the settled combination and kept on struggling with their various issues. Talking of the overseas star players, Jofra Archer brought his ultimate best on the table, in comparison to other foreigners.

The painful thing for the Royals was that their skipper Steve Smith even failed to rise on the occasions when there was a desperate need in the team. Having 12 points at the end of the league stage, RR stood last with an NRR of -0.569. They remained victorious on six occasions and failed to shine in the rest of the matches. In the same light, let’s have a look at players RR might release ahead of the IPL 2021 auction.

David Miller

David Miller

David Miller might be one another name who would lose his spot with Rajasthan Royals ahead of the IPL 2021 auction. The team combination couldn’t just fit in David Miller in this season, and he got just one match in IPL 2020 with Royals. Caught in the hands of luck, Miller had to return to the pavilion without even facing one ball as he got run out. Miller has endured some fine seasons in the history of the cash-rich league with KXIP, but his tenure with RR didn’t come up well. Therefore, the Royals might not retain him in the upcoming season.

2. Robin Uthappa

Rajasthan Royals suffered big time with their middle-order woes as none of the batsmen took responsibility to get the team over the line. Considered as one of their star batsmen, Uthappa also failed to make big for his team. He scored just 196 runs in 12 games at a poor average of 16.33 and a strike rate of 119.52. Keeping in mind Uthappa’s previous stats in IPL, the batsman has had great seasons in the league. In fact, in 2014, he was in awe-inspiring form as he emerged as Orange Cap winner with 660 runs in his bag.

1. Steve Smith

It may come as a surprise, but if reports are believed to be true, skipper Steve Smith would no longer be retained by the Rajasthan team. It has been reported that he couldn’t perform as per the expectations of team management, both as a skipper and a batsman. Though he started with some fifties in IPL 2020 against CSK and KXIP, he just lost his way thereafter. Smith ended his campaign with 311 runs at an average of 25.91 and a strike rate of 131.22. He was retained in 2018 at a massive price of INR 12.5 crores.

SRH should go for him...Good Indian batsmen option.
