Andy Flower named Lucknow IPL franchise head coach

Team owner said the former Zimbabwe captain was chosen because of his "professionalism" as a player and coach

Former Zimbabwe captain Andy Flower has been appointed the head coach of the yet-to-be-named Lucknow IPL franchise. Flower is the first appointment on the coaching staff by the Lucknow franchise, which was bought by Indian business conglomerate RP Sanjiv Goenka Group (RPSG) in August for nearly USD 1 billion.

Sanjiv Goenka, RPSG's owner, told ESPNcricinfo that Flower's contract is "longer", although he didn't specify the exact duration. In a media release, Goenka said Flower was chosen because of his "professionalism" and that he had "left an indelible mark" on the game as both a player and coach.

Flower said he would "relish the challenge to build something meaningful and successful" with the Lucknow franchise, one of the two new IPL teams, along with the Ahmedabad franchise, who will debut in 2022.

Flower is no newcomer to the IPL. He served as the assistant coach for two seasons at Punjab Kings from 2020. Flower's high pedigree as a coach across formats is well-known: he was at the helm when England dominated Test cricket and were No.1 on the rankings about a decade ago as well as when Paul Collingwood's team won the 2010 World T20, England's maiden ICC trophy.

After serving in various coaching roles for 12 years with the ECB, Flower took the plunge into franchise cricket in 2019 where he has had a successful run so far. He was head coach at Multan Sultans who won their maiden PSL title earlier this year. He also led St Lucia Kings to two CPL finals in 2020 and 2021. Flower's latest international assignment was as a consultant with Afghanistan at the T20 World Cup.

Flower might have cut his teeth as an international coach using techniques from the last century, but he has kept an open mind and adapted quickly to the new age. In a recent interview with ESPNcricinfo, Flower acknowledged the importance of data in cricket, but stressed that "looking after the person" still remained his primary job.

"When I was with England, we wanted to approach the game differently, and help us as coaches to understand the game to a different depth and breadth, and also help players challenge their understanding of the game. In this last period, it's an important part of it. But you can never forget that you're dealing with human beings. One of the most important things I've learned in my years of coaching is that looking after the person is more important than developing the player. It's a really important thing to learn as a coach because it drives how you interact with people, and how you care for them."

IPL auction to be held on February 12 and 13 in Bengaluru

The full player list for the auction is expected to be finalised by mid-January

The IPL mega-auction will be a two-day affair, on February 12 and 13, and will be held in Bengaluru ahead of the 2022 season, ESPNcricinfo has learnt. The full player list for the auction is expected to be finalised by mid-January, after the two new franchises have made their picks of up to three players from the auction pool.

While the final date for the new teams to make their picks was December 25, it is now all but certain that this deadline will be deferred. The BCCI is yet to officially appoint the ownership of the Ahmedabad franchise to CVC Capital Partners, who had INR 5625 crore (USD 750 million approx) to acquire the franchise in October.

The BCCI is still doing its due diligence on the company, looking into compliance issues having to do with CVC's ties with two betting companies, in Italy and in Brazil. The BCCI is seeking the counsel of various experts, including a former High Court judge, before they can formally appoint them owners. This process is likely to push the deadline.

The eight existing IPL teams had already completed their retention process on November 30, and will be going into to the pool to rebuild their sides on February 12. Like the existing teams, the new franchises will also start with a purse of INR 90 crore (US$12 million approx.) to make offers for up to three players before the mega-auction. Their purse on auction day will depend on how many players they end up drafting pre-auction.

Tata Group to replace Vivo as IPL title sponsor from this year: Brijesh Patel

The Tata Group will replace Chinese mobile manufacturer as IPL title sponsor from 2022 edition.

The Tata Group will replace Chinese mobile manufacturer Vivo as the title sponsor of the Indian Premier League (IPL) from this year, the cricket league's chairman Brijesh Patel told news agency PTI.

"Yes, Tata group is coming in as IPL title sponsor," Patel was quoted as saying. The decision was taken during IPL's governing council meeting on Tuesday.

Earlier, amid the border tensions between India and China and the rising anti-China sentiment, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Vivo had suspended their ties for IPL 2020.

However, the brand was back as the title sponsor for IPL 2021. Vivo had a Rs 2,200 crore deal for IPL title sponsorship rights from 2018-2022.

The marquee cricket tournament has been expanded to have two new teams from 2022 edition -- Lucknow and Ahmedabad. In October, Sanjiv Goenka-owned RPSG Ventures and Irelia Company Pte Ltd (CVC Capital Partners) had acquired the right to own and operate the two new franchises. While RPSG Ventures made the highest bid of Rs 7,090 crore for Lucknow, CVC Capital Partners had bid Rs 5,625 crore for a team which will be based out of Ahmedabad.

The mega auction for players who have not been retained by IPL franchises is expected to be held next month. The eight old franchises were eligible to retain up to four players with a maximum of three Indians, two overseas players and two uncapped Indians.
