Shikhar Dhawan to lead India in West Indies ODIs

Jadeja named vice-captain; Rohit, Kohli, Hardik, Bumrah, Pant and Shami rested for three-match series

Shikhar Dhawan has been given another chance to lead India's ODI side, this time on the tour of the Caribbean later this month, with Ravindra Jadeja serving as his deputy in the 16-man squad. Designated captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant and Mohammed Shami have all been rested for the three-match series, while KL Rahul, who recently underwent surgery for a sports hernia, was not considered for selection.

Shubman Gill makes his ODI comeback after the tour of Australia in December 2020, while Sanju Samson is back after a year, having played his lone ODI so far in Sri Lanka last July. Samson and Ishan Kishan are the two wicketkeepers in the squad.

Arshdeep Singh, the left-arm pacer who has been included in a full-strength squad for the England ODIs later this month, has been retained alongside Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur. Yuzvendra Chahal, Jadeja and Axar Patel - all part of the England tour party - complete the spin department.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, Avesh Khan and Deepak Hooda, who were all left out of the ODI squad in England, have been included. While opener Gaikwad and fast bowler Avesh are uncapped in the format, Hooda is two matches old in ODIs, having made his debut against West Indies this February.

All three players have established themselves as key members of their respective IPL franchises. Gaikwad was the Orange Cap holder for scoring the most runs in IPL 2021 for champions Chennai Super Kings, while Avesh and Hooda are coming off impressive seasons for IPL debutants Lucknow Super Giants this year. More recently, Hooda made his maiden T20I century on the tour of Ireland late last month.

Gaikwad, in particilar, has been prolific in 50-overs cricket, having hit 603 runs in five innings for Maharashtra during the domestic 50-overs Vijay Hazare Trophy in December last year. He hit four centuries then, the joint-highest in a single edition of the tournament. He struck those runs at a strike rate of 112.94.

Largely seen as a one-format player now, Dhawan will lead India in a series only for the second time. Last July, he led a second-string squad on the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, even as the regulars were in England for the WTC final against New Zealand as well as the Test series against England that followed.

Like Rahul, Deepak Chahar and Kuldeep Yadav were also not considered for selection, with both of them recovering from injuries. Washington Sundar, meanwhile, is in the final stages of his rehab, following which he will fly out to England for a short county stint with Lancashire.

India's tour of the Caribbean begins with the ODIs in Trinidad from July 22. They will also play five T20Is, across Trinidad, St Kitts & Nevis and Florida (USA), before the tour ends on August 7.

India ODI squad: Shikhar Dhawan (capt), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Deepak Hooda, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan (wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Ravindra Jadeja (vice-capt), Shardul Thakur, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Avesh Khan, Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh.

Kohli, Bumrah, Chahal rested for T20Is in West Indies; Kuldeep, Ashwin return

Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and Yuzvendra Chahal are not part of India's 18-member squad for the five T20Is in the Caribbean starting later this month. The squad led by Rohit Sharma has KL Rahul potentially making a return subject to a fitness clearance.

ESPNcricinfo has learnt Kohli, Bumrah and Chahal have been rested, and Kohli, who picked up a "mild groin strain" in England, continues to remain in the team management's plans for the T20 World Cup later this year despite his lean form.

Offspinner R Ashwin, who hasn't featured in India's T20I side since the home series against New Zealand last November, has made a comeback to shore up a spin department that includes Kuldeep Yadav (subject to fitness), Ravi Bishnoi, Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja. Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant, who have been rested from the ODI leg, will play the T20Is.

Umran Malik, the rookie tearaway quick, did not find a place in the squad, with the selectors picking left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh in the seam bowling department along with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Avesh Khan and Harshal Patel.

Having made his T20I debut in Ireland, Malik was also part of the recently concluded T20I series in England, which India won 2-1. In his lone outing in Nottingham, Malik conceded 1 for 56 off his four overs. Arshdeep, meanwhile, took 2 for 18 in an impressive debut in the opening T20I, when he troubled England's openers with swing.

Prior to the T20I series in England, Rohit publicly backed Kohli despite his lean run of scores that have sparked continuous debate over his position in the team.

"I don't know who the experts are," Rohit had said last week. "I don't even understand why they are called experts. They are watching it from outside, they don't know what is going on the inside. We are building a team. A lot of deliberation goes behind it. There is a lot of thinking behind it. Boys are backed. Boys are given chances. People outside don't know all these things. It is not important what is going on outside."

Ishan Kishan has been chosen as the reserve opener and second wicketkeeper for the West Indies T20Is, should Rahul slot back into the XI. Rahul is currently at the NCA in Bengaluru, having returned from a surgery for sports hernia in Germany late June.

He has been out of action since early June, when the illness flared prior to the start of the home series against South Africa. Initially diagnosed as a groin injury, Rahul was withdrawn from the squads for the tour of England. Prior to that, he had led new franchise Lucknow Super Giants to the IPL 2022 playoffs. He ended the season as the second-highest run-scorer, with 616 runs in 15 innings at an average of 51.33 and a strike rate of 135.38.

Deepak Hooda, who made his maiden T20I century in Ireland in June, has been retained in Kohli's absence, as have Dinesh Karthik, Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav.

India begin their Caribbean tour with an ODI series, in which they will be captained by Shikhar Dhawan in the absence of the senior players. The five T20Is begin on July 29 in Tarouba, followed by matches on August 1 and 2 in St Kitts, before the series moves to Florida in the USA for the final two matches on August 6 and 7.

India's squad for the five T20Is: Rohit Sharma (capt), Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul*, Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Shreyas Iyer, Dinesh Karthik, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, R Ashwin, Ravi Bishnoi, Kuldeep Yadav*, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Avesh Khan, Harshal Patel, Arshdeep Singh.

*The inclusion of KL Rahul and Kuldeep Yadav is subject to fitness.

Jason Holder returns to West Indies squad for ODI series against India

The allrounder had missed the previous series against Bangladesh, which West Indies lost 3-0

Allrounder Jason Holder makes a return to West Indies' ODI squad for the three-match series against India beginning on July 22. Holder had been rested for the recently-concluded series against Bangladesh in Guyana, which West Indies lost 3-0.

Fast bowler Anderson Phillip and bowling allrounder Romario Shepherd were not included in the squad after going wicketless against Bangladesh. Phillip played only one match in the series, while Shepherd played all three games.

"As we all know, Jason is one of the leading all-round cricketers in the world and we're happy to have him back in the team," West Indies' chief selector Desmond Haynes said. "He will be refreshed, re-energised and ready to go and we can expect to see his brilliance on the field as well as meaningful contributions off the field as well.

"We had a very challenging three matches against Bangladesh in Guyana so we will be looking to rebound when we face India in the conditions in Trinidad. We have seen some growth among some players, but overall we need to regroup and play better against the Indians."

West Indies have been in woeful ODI form this year, winning just four out of 15 games. Three of those wins came against Netherlands and one against Ireland, and they are currently on a six-game losing streak.

India, on the other hand, are coming off a successful tour of England, where they won the ODI series 2-1, although they will be without key players such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant, all of whom have been rested for the series in the Caribbean.

Shikhar Dhawan is India's stand-in captain for the three ODIs, which be played on July 22, 24 and 27 at Queen's Park Oval in Trinidad.

It is good to have backups, but too many people are included in the squad - many of them know they won't be in 11 unless multiple people injured.

Hope mgmt is clear about it and players are mentally strong to be part of the squad for months but not getting any match.

good decision about umran malik - he is not fit for international matches , they gave chances and he should be back to domestic matches and improve, he needs variety , accuracy.

people are lining him up easily
