They changed the story in the series .. In the book, he gets killed by Qarl.. no one knows why he killed.. the reason is kept open to interpretation.. 

they are trying to portray Rhaenyra as a positive character and Alicent as a negative one so that the audience can sympathize with Rhaenyra.. but they are both grey characters in the book.. both of them have their goods and bads..
