I have 4 homes. 1 primary and 3 investment home

Honest advice to everyone is never buy , always rent and invest the remaining

Other than prestige that you are staying in 3000/4000 sqft home the pressure for EMI is real and will prevent you from all other joys from life.

And some nela ticket fellow dont tell me you will build equity.

Nenu 41, I've always lived in apartments in India from my birth/childhood time.....and in US also..

Now i can't stand living in big homes anymore ...oka lanti bayam...too out in the open anipisthadi... I can't sleep or even relax for one second if I spend the night by myself in big homes

i believe you don't really need all that space unless you really have the desire to be "perceived rich" or want to do "indoor walking", host large large gatherings to show off...cookfests, potlucks etc.... I don't understand why you need a 30 year mortgage to hand off your money and maintain extra space in your home for those rare occasions ....unless the space is for your ghostly forefathers 😂😂😂😂

2 story considering there are enough rooms downstairs that you only use upstairs once in a while when needed

we have additional bedrooms and media room upstairs which we use occasionally.

dont go for house which have one of primary bedrooms upstairs and you have go up and down frequently.

many close their mortgage much early and own the homes. especially when both husband and wife are working.  lomng term lo houses generally giove you profit when you sell here.

wrt space...that is individual choice. early in our marriage we used to love apartments. now with kids....we feel a large house is needed with all the the family needs.   perceived rich is not a right word here. not everyone buys for that

Agree with your advice...but curious as to why you are not practising what you preach??

Already my primary home is available for rent and we are moving to a rented SFH in 2-3 months once primary is rented out

Flaunting is done by teenagers and young adults. To some its for earning praise, sharpening ego etc to attain something higher. After a certain point it does more damage than benefits, every one learns this lesson by the time they are 40. if not, they will only realize it after losing something greater than what they tried to flaunt.

However, what is the kick out of making someone else jealous?

You want to prove to yourself that they are bad?

or to show others they are bad?

or to prove you are better than them?

or to prove they are worse than your current state?

Jealousy is a snake. if you grow it in someone it will eventually come to bite you in the ass at a wrong time. if you grow it in yourself, you will eventually have to bite your own tail for relieving yourself out of your miserable state.

2 story homes estory:

cons:

  • free knee pains
  • parents will not like as they can not come upstairs, you will hear sarcastic comments/complaints when they come
  • sometimes you may not be able to monitor your kids when they are playing (when you have kids)
  • Its a pain to get something if you forget (ex: watch or glasses), especially if you have office upstairs

pros:

  • Feels roomier than single floor
  • If you have high ceiling it enhances the overall aesthetic of the house
  • I'm told that its actually cheaper to build than a ranch house but I feel resale value is likely higher than ranch houses

few points I would advise:

  • Consider location as a key criteria as you can easily rent it out if you have to move (given that you are single sinthakai, I mean beerakaya), larger homes will be difficult to rent here unless you are in prime location
  • on the contrary, If you have money and a stable job and about to get hitched, get a larger home even if its not in prime location and have good scope of future growth in that area , lot of folks regret buying smaller homes, its one of the most common regret people have here
  • choose a good builder and double check on warranty, property taxes, HOA etc

Good luck! Happy house huntin!
