After ‘25 yrs’ at Microsoft, employee sacked on his 48th birthday; wife pens emotional post

Microsoft's layoffs impacted three percent of its workforce, sparking emotional responses online. A wife shared her husband's story of being let go after 25 years, highlighting his dedication and contributions, while also noting the impersonal nature of the decision made by an algorithm.

Tech giant Microsoft has confirmed the layoff of approximately three per cent of its workforce across various teams and geographies. In the wake of the announcement, affected employees and their families have taken to social media to express their distress. Among them, the wife of a long-serving Microsoft employee posted on LinkedIn, stating that her husband, who had been with the company for 25 years, was laid off after being “randomly selected by a computer algorithm.”

“My husband has worked for Microsoft for 25 years. He was just laid off — randomly selected by a computer algorithm. His last day is this Friday — his 48th birthday,” she wrote.

She further revealed that her husband is autistic and lives with multiple sclerosis. “He’s the most quietly loyal, brilliant person I’ve ever met. Never missed a day of work. Rarely called in sick (and would then work from home). Worked 60+ hours a week. Took on-call shifts during Christmas and Thanksgiving so coworkers with children could be home. He never asked for raises or promotions — he just kept showing up and solving impossible problems,” she added.

According to the post, he has received awards for resolving multi-million-dollar technical issues and has mentored hundreds of colleagues, some of whom have risen to leadership positions. “Even the CEOs knew his name. And yet he was let go — by a spreadsheet,” she said.

“He got his 25-year crystal a few months ago. Now he’s being walked out. He would be so embarrassed if he knew I was writing this. He’s proud of keeping a stiff upper lip and not making a fuss. But I couldn’t let him leave without someone hearing the story,” she continued.

“I don’t need pity. I just need someone to know what this world does to the people who give it everything — quietly, consistently, and without ever asking for more,” she concluded.

Separately, Gabriela de Queiroz, Director of AI at Microsoft and also affected by the recent layoffs, reflected on her experience via LinkedIn.

“These days, no matter how hard you work, how much you advocate for your company, or how much results and visibility you bring — whether it’s helping Microsoft become a trusted name among AI startups or driving initiatives to make it a better place to work for hundred of people — none of that makes you immune to restructuring,” she stated.

The same company that gave him a crystal for loyalty fired him through a computer program on the day he turned 48.
The spreadsheet didn't see his awards. It didn't count the holidays he worked.
It just saw a number.
The code he wrote saved the company millions, yet code was what ultimately replaced him.
Imagine working for 25 years at Microsoft, helping hundreds of people with impossible problems, and getting praise from CEOs, only to be fired on your birthday by a computer.
I felt heartbroken after reading that story.
After 25 years of loyalty, intelligence, and selfless service, he was reduced to a row in a spreadsheet and deleted on his birthday by a program.Yes, this was another layoff, I know that thought is still in your head. Like the 0000s of others that have been in the news since the 2023 downturn.

What makes this one different?
Well, this is a terrible loss for someone who quietly and regularly gave their all, even though they were going through hard times. It's very hard on the person who was fired, his family, and his whole life, which was built around a company and family at work who meant a lot to him.
This causes us to face harsh truths in these uncertain times.
Even though algorithms are useful, they don't always have the heart to value real experience and loyalty.
It used to be a badge of honor, but now it's a double-edged sword.
For many years, being tenured was seen as the best proof of loyalty, skill, and worth.
Today, as technology changes, experience alone isn't a guarantee of a job or even a useful way to stand out.
The "agentification" of work by AI is about to happen (2024–2030).
As more work is done by AI, it may change what it means to have a long and successful job in the future.
In today's business world, where older workers have to fight ageism more and more. this story about the layoff shows what's truly wrong with how we value human contribution.

Algorithms just don't
- Give credit to the guide who helped other people become leaders.
- There is no way for them to figure out how much someone taking holiday jobs so parents can be with their kids is worth.
- There is no way to measure quiet dedication.

For seasoned workers who have to deal with this new reality, I believe -
- Your worth goes beyond any one employer—your decades of experience fixing problems can't be replaced.
- Now is the time to use relationships that have been built over many years—ask for conversations that could change your future.
- Think about advisory or part-time jobs where your knowledge of the business can be your biggest asset.
- Look into how your experience fits in with new technologies. Everyone has something to offer when it comes to creativity.
The world needs what you know. Your story isn't over, its evolving.
Good luck with your career!

Every spouse of a fired employee feels this way. The fast they move on, the better it is for them.  the company has provided livelihood/career for him for 25 yrs and taken care of his family. It’s always a business for the company. We should also be the same.
If he is as good as she says, he will get a job in no time.

we are all on a timeline to get fired some day. Some early, some later. Do not be emotionally invested in the company. Opportunities done come, you have to look for them. Upskill yourself the free time you get during work hours rather than social media (I am telling myself too). Dont be shocked if you get laid off. Be prepared.

Staet planning for alternative sources of income. Save money and keep an emergency fund. Pay off your loans with any extra money you got. Save money for kids tuition fees. PLAN properly. If you cannot talk to a financial advisor or talk to a finance savvy friend.

I do not know why people feel working 60 hours in a week is working hard. It’s not. If you observe closely you will see a person doing mundane repeated tasks rather than automate or put together a proper solution. It’s their comfort and any automation efforts bring insecurity issues. They do not understand they can devote more time for family, better utilize their time at work, learn new things, etc.

Work SMART, not HARD.

Guruji cheppinattu emi cheyyakunda evarni ibbandi pettakunda calm ga mana pani chesukuntam kuda not easy for years.

that needs discipline too.

She mentioned, solving impossible problems, that definitely needs immense amount of hard work. being autistic and still work driven, solution minded, seems a tough job.

Its all perspective bro, I feel, we need all kinds of people, Life is an amalgamation of all kinds. That balance is what we need.

Of course she would say that. You have to take it with a pinch of salt. It’s tough for me to believe that someone that valuable and smart would be let go. There is a chance it’s true.

I have seen many people who work HARD and when I observed them closely, it’s repeated tasks like they would be processing failed orders manually one after the other manually all night. Never fix the infrastructure tuning that’s leading to failures. I was handed this team and with in 1 week I freed 90% of their team fixing tuning issues and it’s not even my expertise. They were not happy about it though. After 1 year they thank me recognizing the change it brought.

I do agree that all kinds of people are needed. Just don’t make ourselves too important or in-important. Just the right balance. Don’t emotionally invest in the company. Demand pay for that, get compensated and treat it as a transaction. Some emotional attachment will be there, that’s enough.
Invest in Yourself and your family.

Felt sad for the layoff

Good thing is, he gets easily hired by any big company knowing his accomplishments.

I can only see a bright future ahead for him, if he can put aside that immeasurable disrespect by old company

Nobody interested in old horses.

How can you come in to conclusion that he belongs to such category who cant figure out things? We know nothing about him right? Or do you know about him?

Yes, we are always solution minded(many of us), We cant simply let it leave and stay there, We always think the way to fix the things properly. We never hesitate to learn new things, its in our blood(indians).
