Madras regiment, Jaat regiment, Sikh regiment, Rajput regiment, Gurkha rifles .. Ila chala unnaayi.. they are still continuing this regiment structure we inherited from the British.. but you don’t have to be from that caste to be part of that regiment.. 

Not entirely true. Officer recruitment is open to all. The rank and file recruitment is different. All single class regiments recruit only from single caste /community. Mixed class regiments recruit people from different backgrounds. 

Jat Regiment has overwhelming Jats, Sikh regiment is only Jat Sikhs, Sikh light infantry is Mazabhi and Ramdasia, Kumaoni is only Kumaoni so on.

Mahar regiment was also early on a single class regiment and recruited only Mahars, eventually was opened to all later.
