LPG shortage crisis: Mysuru hoteliers ready to pay any price for a cylinder, but none available

Hotel Owners’ Association of Mysuru President Narayanagowda C. said the city has an estimated 1,500 hotels, restaurants, fast food outlets, tea stalls and other eateries that rely on commercial LPG for their operations

Hoteliers in Mysuru are staring at an imminent crisis in view of the disruption in supply of commercial Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders in the city.

President of Hotel Owners’ Association of Mysuru Narayanagowda C. said the impact of the disruption in delivery of commercial LPG cylinders is expected to be felt by hotels and restaurants in Mysuru in the next two days.

“The hotel industry in Mysuru will have to shut down in the coming one or two days. If not fully, at least 50% of the hotels will not be able to operate due to disruption in supply of commercial LPG cylinders,” he said referring to the reported suspension in delivery of cylinders by one of the three oil manufacturing companies in Mysuru.

The distributors in Mysuru are unable to supply commercial cylinders as they are not receiving the same from oil manufacturing companies due to the ongoing military hostilities between Israel and US on one side and Iran on the other, he said.

Mr Narayanagowda even pointed out that the price of a cylinder had been increased by more than ₹300 since March 1. Even if the hoteliers pay the increased price, the LPG cylinders are not available, he lamented.

No hotelier in Mysuru will be able to shift to wood or other alternative fuels that had been discontinued more than 40 years ago. If the disruption prolongs, uncertainty will grip the hotel industry, which not only feeds thousands of people, including students and tourists, but also employs 25,000 persons in Mysuru.

Mr Narayanagowda said Mysuru has an estimated 1,500 hotels, restaurants, fast food outlets, tea stalls and other eateries that rely on commercial LPG for their operations.

The Hotel Owners’ Association in Mysuru has written a letter to Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri seeking clarity and assurance for the restaurant and hospitality industry with regard to the recent Government Order prioritising LPG production for domestic consumption.

“Restaurants, hotels and food service establishments are an essential part of the urban economy, and rely heavily on commercial LPG to operate safely and efficiently. Unlike many other sectors, most commercial kitchens do not yet have viable and immediate alternatives, such as PNG or electric cooking systems. Any disruption in LPG supply can directly impact daily operations, employment, and access to food for consumers,” Mr. Narayanagowda and Association Secretary Ravindra Bhat stated in the letter to Mr. Puri.

Further, the association, in the letter, has requested Oil Marketing Companies to ensure that distributors continue servicing commercial establishments without interruption.

LPG shortage crisis: Only tea and coffee at Bengaluru eateries amid low supply of gas cylinders

The Bengaluru Hotels Association, on March 9, expressed that the hotels in the capital may have to shut down if regular supply of commercial gas cylinders is not resumed

Amid escalating tensions in West Asia and rising global oil prices linked to the ongoing conflict between Iran and the United States, several small eateries in Bengaluru limited their services to tea and coffee on Tuesday (March 10, 2026), citing uncertainty over the supply of commercial LPG cylinders.

The Bengaluru Hotels Association had on Monday (March 9, 2026) warned that while the situation appeared manageable for the moment, hotels may be forced to halt food services if the supply of LPG cylinders is not restored. Hoteliers said they had been informed by dealers that commercial cylinders had not been refilled since March 7.

“We cannot shut our businesses for an entire day. So, we have decided to continue serving tea and coffee until we receive confirmation that the supply has been restored. Usually, we keep two induction stoves as a backup, but, in such a situation, it is very difficult to serve full meals because we use two to three cylinders every day,” said Babu S. of Udupi Aahar at Vasanth Nagar in central Bengaluru.

“We were assured by the Ministry that there would be no disruption in supply for the next 60 days, as the Union government had also stated in its social media posts. But suddenly we were informed that there is a shortage and that refilling has been stopped. Hotels cannot find alternatives overnight. We can only work out other options if we are informed at least 15 days in advance. Right now, everything has come to a standstill,” said S.P. Krishnaraj, owner of Nisarga Grand, an eatery on Nripatunga Road.

Another restaurant at Shivaji Nagar had put up a sign during lunch time at 1 p.m. stating that “Only tea and coffee are available”. On any other day, at this time, this restaurant would be packed with customers ordering and eating dosa, rice items, or idli.

Several restaurants informed that they received messages from gas dealers stating that supplies would remain unavailable until further notice, creating panic among hoteliers.

Arun Prasad M. of Anna Mess at Malleswaram said the issue had already been conveyed to the authorities concerned both in the State and in New Delhi. “A solution must be found at the earliest as a large number of people depend on these eateries,” he said.

LPG crisis: Coimbatore hotels cut service timings, menus

The Sree Annapoorna Sree Gowrishankar Group put out a notice on Monday night informing customers that it will limit its menu to essential items, and the availability of some items will be restricted to specific hours of the day

K.A. Ramaswamy, president of Coimbatore District Hoteliers Association, said the oil marketing companies stopped the supply of commercial LPG cylinders from Tuesday (March 10). “We are managing with the cylinders that we have. We have cut down on Chinese items at the live counters, removed parottas from the menu, and restricted dosa and puri items to peak hours,” he said.

The 262 hotels that are members of the association will be able to manage for a couple of days and may start shutting down operations after that. “There are thousands of smaller hotels in the district. No one operating in the city limits uses firewood because of inspections and safety norms. They will be the worst-hit,” he said.
