Manufacturing ‘Corporate Jihad: How a Rumour Consumed Nashik

A workplace dispute escalates into a “jihad” narrative, amplified by media hype, political agendas, and online misinformation.

A single workplace dispute spirals into a full-blown “jihad” narrative—fueled by media frenzy, political interests, and digital misinformation. Inside the anatomy of a story that was built, amplified, and believed.

It's all about one romantic affair gone wrong. The rest of the story was manufactured by the local police with the obvious intent of pleasing the political masters in Mumbai.

she is going to file for anticipatory bail plea on prefnancy grounds

The main accused, Tausif Attar, is alleged to have singled out Hindu religious practices. The witness claimed he frequently mocked female employees during festivals, particularly when they wore saris or bindis.

“All the accused, especially their manner of communication, were completely vulgar. Girls were called to the TL desk and subjected to obscene language unimaginable in any professional or commercial office," the former employee told NDTV.

“On all festivals, when we wore saris, he would question our attire and religion. As we left, he would make such remarks that we began to question how a team leader could mock another religion so much," the employee added.

In another claim, the former employee alleged that a colleague named Krishna, who earlier wore a Rudraksha rosary to the office, later converted to Islam. He also referred to Nida Khan, currently under investigation, stating that she was not part of the HR department but worked as a process associate and was “unusually seeking a transfer and a domain change."

Separately, the employee alleged that strict measures were enforced inside the office in the name of security, requiring staff to leave their phones, bags and even lunch boxes outside the work floor, which, he claimed, ensured that activities within remained “off the record."

The witness also named two other staff, Danish and Raza, who allegedly booked hotels and resorts for weekends from the office floor and pressured young women employees to join them. Describing the overall environment as toxic, she said that she now feels safe after leaving the company.

Another victim, described being physically and psychologically isolated: “I was made to work alone on the rooftop. My phone was snatched." The act, he suggested, was not random punishment but a deliberate tactic to cut him off and exert control.

These allegations are part of several claims made by eight female staff at the TCS Nashik office involving sexual harassment and forced religious conversion.

A petition was filed in the Supreme Courton Thursday seeking directions to the central and state governments to control deceitful religious conversion.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted last week to probe the matter, following which seven employees were arrested. Those taken into custody include Danish Sheikh, Tausif Attar, Raza Memon, Shahrukh Qureshi, Shafi Sheikh, Asif Aftab Ansari, and HR manager Nida Khan.

In the midst of all this, the Indian Express ran a story datelined Nashik, April 13 (published in print on April 14 and since updated), quoting the TCS top management’s admission of possible error in not having kept a stricter watch over complaints emanating from its Nashik unit. A senior management source was quoted saying that an oral complaint had been received from one female employee about unwanted romantic attentions from a person senior to her in the hierarchy. Nothing, though, had been committed to writing.

Local police had evidently been alerted to the strange behaviour of a female employee who had begun observing the Ramzan fast and “living in an Islamic manner” (whatever that may mean). Once the local police contacted the family of the woman in question, her family had stopped her from going to work. This had, in turn, led to the creation of an undercover team to infiltrate the TCS establishment in Nashik.

It seems increasingly clear that the whole operation was a “sting” carried out with political motives. In its print edition of April 16, the Indian Express reported that the entire fracas was caused by one romantic relationship gone wrong. It involved precisely one employee of the unit, no more.

By implication, the rest of the story was manufactured by the local police with the obvious intent of pleasing the political masters in Mumbai.
