CROWN POINT, Ind. (WISH) — A 25-year-old woman is dead, and four people are severely hurt after a two-vehicle crash in Crown Point Saturday night.

According to a release from state police, at approximately 11:15 p.m., police responded to a two‑vehicle crash on northbound I‑65, about one mile south of the Crown Point exit. When officers arrived, they found a 2015 Chevrolet Suburban blocking the center and right lanes, and a red 2016 Dodge minivan in a ditch.

After investigating, police learned that the minivan, which was occupied by seven people, had been traveling in the right lane at approximately 10 to 15 mph while following another vehicle experiencing mechanical issues.

“The driver of the Chevrolet did not realize how slowly the minivan was traveling and attempted to avoid it by swerving left,” the release said. Despite this effort, the Chevrolet struck the rear left side of the minivan, forcing it off the road and into a ditch.

Police say the two front passengers of the minivan were unharmed and remained in the vehicle, but the remaining five passengers were seated on boxes of mangos and were not wearing seat belts.

Five of the passengers were taken to the hospital due to severe injuries, and one of the passengers, 25-year-old Navya Gadusu of Chicago, died after arriving.

The vehicle the minivan was following was not struck.

Northbound I‑65 was closed for approximately two hours for crash investigation and scene cleanup.

Police want to remind drivers of the importance of wearing seatbelts and if a car is experiencing mechanical issues, the safest action is to pull onto the shoulder, activate hazard lights, and remain off the roadway until help arrives.
