The world’s most powerful typhoon Haiyan of the year gained strength on Thursday as it swirled towards the Philippines, forcing mass evacuations, flight cancellations and school suspensions across the disaster.
 
2013′s strongest tropical cyclone ever on the planet is going to hit Philippines. The world’s most powerful typhoon Haiyan generating wind gusts exceeding 330 kilometres (200 miles) an hour and set to hit on Friday morning. Haiyan was expected make landfall on Samar island, about 600 kilometres southeast of Manila, then cut across the central and southern Philippines before exiting into the South China Sea late on Saturday.
 
As of 9 p.m., the eye of the typhoon was 338 kilometers (211 miles) southeast of Eastern Samar province’s Guiuan township. The storm was moving at 39 kph (24 mph), up from its earlier speed of 33 kph (20 mph)
 
“Based on satellite imagery, [Haiyan's] the strongest storm I’ve seen since Bopha (2012),” says Ryan Maue, a meteorologist with WeatherBell Analytics.
