n early July, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) had announced an ambitious project as part of the 'Swachh Hyderabad' Programme - to segregate biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste at source. Armed with a whopping Rs 41 crore, the corporation procured as many as 44 lakh dustbins - in red and green - to be distributed among the 22 lakh households located within its limits.

The objective: to ensure that the waste generated every day is segregated right at the homes of residents and subsequently dumped at different locations for better waste management.

Three months hence, the plan is yet to take off. Not only have the dustbins not been bought and distributed, even the location of the new dump yards haven't been made public. The Rs 41 crore continues to still pretty in the GHMC coffers.
