Did emperor Sri Krishnadevaraya live on prostitutes' money? Well the answer is yes if the BA (bachelor of arts) history textbooks in Andhra Pradesh are anything to go by.

This link between Sri Krishnadevaraya and the prostitutes might not have caught the public eye, but for a Telugu news channel which publicized this issue prominently.

According to the BA textbooks, Sri Krishnadevaraya, encouraged many red light areas in his kingdom. So much so that these red light areas became famous all over India and men used to come to Vijayanagar kingdom from far off places not just for business but also to have 'few months' of good time! And the textbooks say that a major source of the Sri Krishnadevaraya's govt income used to come from the tax imposed on these red light areas and the prostitutes!

But one wonders whether all this is correct. Because there are hundreds of versions of the life of Sri Krishnadevaraya. So obviously the writers of textbooks might have sourced their information from one such version.

Incidentally one version on the life of Sri Krishnadevaraya even claims that he was a womanizer and he had tens of concubines!

But one thing is for sure. During his regime the people of his kingdom prospered a lot.
