it has nothing to do with competition, or usefulness to humans, or merit. Its just plain old tribalism, except everyone is sold on the idea that it is based on merit.

wherever there is higher investment to labour ratio, there will be higher pay there.

....in the commodity market people are just like items. Software industry skill set is a combination of several things. Most in western world are not after that skill set. So, there is a shortage of labor, which causes demand , which then results in the higher pay.
