IPL 2022 auction purse swells to INR 90 crore

The retention window for the eight older franchises is from November 1 to 30, while the window for the two new ones is from December 1 to 25.

The salary purse for the IPL 2022 auction has been set at INR 90 crore per team, an increase from the IPL 2021 auction purse of 85 crore. As reported by ESPNcricinfo, each of the eight older franchises will be allowed to retain up to four players, with the IPL governing council setting different salary slabs for the number of players retained.

The two new franchises - Lucknow and Ahmedabad - will be allowed to acquire up to three players each from the player pool after the original eight teams have made their retention picks. The retention window for the eight older franchises is from November 1 to November 30, while the window for the two new ones is from December 1 to December 25. The IPL 2022 auction is likely to take place in January 2022.

If one of the eight older franchises retains four players, they will be debited INR 16 crore for the first, INR 12 crore for the second, INR 8 crore for the third and INR 6 crore for the fourth - making for a total deduction of INR 42 crore.

For all ten franchises, the amounts for retaining either three, two or one player are the same.

If they retain three players then their slabs are: INR 15 crore, INR 11 crore and INR 7 crore, for a total of INR 33 crore.

If two players are retained, then the slabs are INR 14 crore and INR 10 crore, for a total of INR 24 crore.

For only one player, INR 14 crore will be deducted from a franchise's auction purse. If the sole retained player is uncapped, then the amount deducted will be INR 4 crore.

While the IPL has set out the salary slabs for retention, franchises are free to pay players whatever sum they mutually agree on. What will be deducted from a franchise's auction purse is whichever amount is higher. If a franchise pays a player less than his retention slab, they will lose the retention slab amount. If a franchise pays a player more than the amount ascribed to a retention slab, then that higher amount will be deducted from the franchise's auction purse. That applies to the two new franchises too.

For example, ahead of the mega auction in 2018, Royal Challengers Bangalore paid Virat Kohli INR 17 crore as their retention fee, and lost that amount from their purse, though the slab had been set at INR 15 crore for the first player's retention.

As reported by ESPNcricinfo, the eight old franchises can retain up to a maximum of three Indian players, capped or uncapped. They can't retain more than two overseas players either, and neither can they retain more than two uncapped Indian players.

The retention rules for the two new franchises are: not more than two Indian players - capped or uncapped, not more than one overseas player, and not more than one uncapped player.

It is likely that the two new franchises will have a separate draft for their retentions. There is a 25-day window for the new franchises since their retentions will also involve negotiations with the players they want to pick.

IPL 2022: MS Dhoni Doesn’t Want Us To Lose Money While Retaining Him – N Srinivasan

MS Dhoni tells CSK boss N Srinivasan he doesn't want to be RETAINED

Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni, who won the fourth title for his franchise this year, does not want to be retained by his franchise, revealed CSK boss N Srinivasan. The reason MS has cited is to do with the amount of money being spent to retain the first choice player by all eight franchises, as per the BCCI rules.

Speaking to Editorji, Srinivasan said, "MS Dhoni is a fair person, he wants retention policy to come out as he doesn't want CSK to lose lots money while retaining him - that is why he gives different reply to everyone."

The IPL retention rules state that a franchise can retain upto four players and it will have to spend Rs 16 crore for the first player, Rs 12 crore for the second, Rs 8 for the third player and Rs 6 crore for the fourth respectively. The costing changes when the number of retained players go down.

So, if CSK decides to retain four players, they will have to spend Rs 16 crore for Dhoni, who should be their first player to be retained.

However, Dhoni feels he should not be retained as it will save big cost for the franchise.

In the upcoming mega auctions, the salary purse for each franchise will be of Rs 90 crore, a Rs 5 crore increase from the previous purse of Rs 85 crore. If a team retains four players, then it will shell out Rs 42 crore already and Dhoni, it appears, does not approve of the rule going by the statement made by Srinivisan.

The eight franchises can retain the players between 1 to 30 November.

IPL 2022 | Ravi Shastri Approached by Ahmedabad Franchise For Head Coach's Position: Report

The CVC Capitals won the bid for the Ahmedabad franchise and now they are looking to hire the best of team managements to start their IPL journey from next year.

The 2022 season of Indian Premier League is going to be bigger as compared to the previous ones with the addition of two new teams - Ahmedabad and Lucknow. Both teams were acquired for a whopping combined price of over INR 12,500 crore. The CVC Capitals won the bid for the Ahmedabad franchise and now they are looking to hire the best of team managements to start their IPL journey from next year.

According to a report on Cricbuzz, the CVC capitals have approached Team India’s outgoing coach Ravi Shastri for the role of their head coach. The 59-year-old is currently on his last assignment with the Indian team in the UAE for the T20 World Cup. The report suggests that Shastri have told the franchise owners to give him some time as he wants to focus on the India team for the T20 World Cup and will make his decision after that.

Shastri is expected to return to the commentary box after completing his coaching stint with the Indian cricket team but the offer from the new IPL franchise might push those plans for the future. If the former Indian cricketer accepts the offers, Bharat Arun and R Sridhar will be part of his staff. When Shastri becomes the coach of an IPL team then he will not be eligible to get the BCCI direct commentary contract. However, he can have a contract with the broadcasters themselves.

After Shastri’s tenure, India’s batting great Rahul Dravid will take over the charge of Team India and his first assignment will be against New Zealand for three T20Is and two Tests.

Dravid hailed Shastri’s legacy as the Team India head coach after his appointment and said he will try to take it forward.

“Under Mr Shastri, the team has done very well, and I hope to work with the team to take this forward,” Dravid said in the statement released by BCCI.

Shastri has been serving as the India head coach since July 2017 and under him, the team has tasted unprecedented success on the Test tours of Australia and elsewhere. Under him, India made the semi-finals of the 2016 World T20 and also the last-four stage of the 2019 ODI World Cup as well.
