Of course she would say that. You have to take it with a pinch of salt. It’s tough for me to believe that someone that valuable and smart would be let go. There is a chance it’s true. I have seen many people who work HARD and when I observed them closely, it’s repeated tasks like they would be processing failed orders manually one after the other manually all night. Never fix the infrastructure tuning that’s leading to failures. I was handed this team and with in 1 week I freed 90% of their team fixing tuning issues and it’s not even my expertise. They were not happy about it though. After 1 year they thank me recognizing the change it brought. I do agree that all kinds of people are needed. Just don’t make ourselves too important or in-important. Just the right balance. Don’t emotionally invest in the company. Demand pay for that, get compensated and treat it as a transaction. Some emotional attachment will be there, that’s enough. Invest in Yourself and your family.
