VIJAYAWADA, MARCH 26. Feuding in the family of the slain Congress legislator, Vangaveeti Mohana Ranga, is out in the open once again, with his daughter, Asha, creating a scene in the city on Friday. Asha wanted to launch a hunger strike demanding Congress ticket to her mother, Ratna Kumari. But, for reasons not made public, she dropped the plan.

Her elder brother, Radhakrishna, has become a cynosure of all eyes in the Congress after he joined the party a couple of months ago amid much fanfare in the city. Mr. Radhakrishna has thrown his hat into the ring for Congress ticket in the coming elections. After Ranga was killed, Ratna Kumari was elected to the Assembly on the Congress ticket twice -- in 1989 and 1994 -- from the Vijayawada East constituency. However, for personal reasons, she shunned the identity of being the "bahu'' of the Vangaveeti clan by changing her surname to her maiden one -- Chennupati. Accordingly, his children also changed their surnames. But, Mr. Radhakrishna entered public life with his father's surname, much to the consternation of his mother. Later, she joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). She, however, left the TDP as she could not get "due respect'' there and returned to the Congress. It became embarrassing to the former MLA to compete with her own son in the run-up for the Congress ticket. Against this background, Ms. Asha wanted to support the cause of her "pained'' mother. She decided to come out in the open and launch a hunger strike demanding Congress ticket to her mother. She felt that this act of hers could be an "eye-opener'' to her brother. Surprisingly, her move was dropped suddenly.
