Amidst a growing backlog of visa applications for Indians trying to visit the United States, the embassies and consulates of the US have created a new record for number of visas processed in the year 2023. As per official data, the USA processed 14 lakh visas for Indian applicants. This is the highest number of applications processed in a year. The year 2023 saw a huge increase in the number of applications across all visas from India. The US embassies and consulates resorted to increasing the number of staff at various locations to meet the demand. The embassies also took help of technology to reduce processing time. In 2023, the US processed 140,000 student visas for Indians which is higher than any other country. Indians also received 700,000 visitor visas in the year 2023. The time for processing visitor visas also reduced from 1000 days to 250 days in the same period. Most of these visas are processed at Mumbai, New Delhi, Hyderabad and Chennai. Employment visas remained the priority at most of the embassies and 380,000 visas were processed in 2023.
