UPI for NRO account

I was aware that UPI was enabled for NRI's since Jun 2023. I have an ICICI NRO account that is registered with my US number. I tried multiple times in the past to activate UPI. This time I am in India and was casually checking if there is any update and to my surprise it worked.

I went to ICICI mobile app (You can also do this from web), go to UPI payments tab, and just follow the instructions.  I actually did a few payments and it works seemlessly.

BUT, there is a bit of problem here though. I had use ICICI mobile only to make upi payments everytime. So everytime, you have to login to mobile app, go UPI option, scan qr code, enter the amount and then enter the PIN and make payment. mobile app isn't that fast, it takes time to go to next screen.and sometimes it times out as well, if you stay on the page for a bit more time. So, in Crowded places or when you are in queue and the person behind is waiting , it seems like an awful lot of time to complete transaction.

This is not the case with Paytm, BHIM or GPAY apps in India. They are super fast. BUT These apps are not accepting US numbers. When I try to signup for one of these, the ISD code is non-editable and fixed to +91 code. Which means the NRI UPI isn't available in these apps..

Funny thing here is, i think for the first time Govt is faster than these private companies. Govt has already enable UPI for NRIs but these apps are yet to catch up include the services.

 

Let me know if you know of any app that accepts US numbers..

When I go India , I update nri account to India number ( 1 call and 5 mins lo done ) and use gpay everywhere , so easy and comfortable.

IMobile is buggy sometimes.

Recently opened nro account with us number.. customer advisor said we can change it to india number and then use for upi's.

But gpay is based on your gmail profile right, how does the india number matter. For me GPAY is not even showing the UPI payment method option, because its US GPAY app..

any Payment App, wether Gpay or Paytm..... ki UPI is the backbone for transactions in India..

UPI non +91 numbers ki pani cheyadu....even if you already have GPay app..

SBI lo aite...online avvaledu naaku.. but they claim it works

had to submit paper in person.
