Anna mana personal storage.devices are useless personally in my view...

For photos u can use Amazon photos which is freecloud storage buy Google storage...

The main plus point of using Google storage is they are failure safe

Consider if you have something like a Synology storage put something like 16 terabytes of storage in a small enclosed box  if one of them fails you lose all the data so it  practically makes useless instead of you taking the risk put the risk on someone else and pay the money for it and be with that you're not liable for the loss of data.it might cost you the price of a coffee over a year to purchase a cloud storage if you want to have something like a side project, project just use their raspberry pi 4 to set up a cloud storage

I thought.. NAS is like this -- we put two to four drives in it and all of them bear mirror copies of the same data and we don't lose data even if one of the drive fails. We can replace the drive safely without any loss of data in such failover.

Also, thought our data will be secure and can be accessed from any where in the world.

Cloud storage might be vulnerable for thefts ( I might be wrong and dumb here)

I’m interested too.
But I don’t think we can make our storage more secure than google or Microsoft bro. But at least will have peace of mind that my info is with me alone and no one is using it for their AI learnings.

Take NAS specific harddrives period.

Even if you have 10 back up HDD's, it is not fail safe.. as long as they are all in the same NAS drive.  A crash due to a power surge or physical damage or theft or something like that may impact all 10 copies.  A better approach .. have two NAS setups at two different places (say one in basement and one in other floor or different location).  Have one as primary and setup another as backup.

it will cost a price of coffee now... but once there is enough depenency they will charge more. And getting data out of cloud is also going to be pricy in future.

similar to cloud storage, you can opt for redundancy. The memory components themselves have RAIN schemes for your paranoia. I agree you might have component defects but these are a rarety. DPM is less than 100. In addition, when you set up NAS servers, you yourself can employ redundancy. I agree Cloud storage charges may be price of coffee over a year, but your own NAS server will be much cheaper. Memory is very cheap. No wonder these datacenter companies make so much. Most importantly, privacy matters.

Yes, but there is also other side to the argument here. Are you going to carry and resetup each time you move. If you are setting up in your own house, it makes sense. Also, once it is connected to internet for your remote accessibility, you risk security of your data.
