Navy to Purchase Air Dropped Anti-Submarine Munitions; RFIs Issued to OEMs and V

The Indian Navy is looking to purchase air-dropped, anti-submarine munitions in order to strengthen its anti-submarine capability. This is considered by strategic analysts as an obvious move given that Chinese and Pakistani Navies are heavily dependent on submarines as part of their Naval warfare doctrines.

The Ministry of Defence has issued a request to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and vendors for information on such bombs, which could be used by Navy's fixed-wing aircraft.

"The defence ministry intends to procure air-dropped underwater bombs for fixed wing aircraft (in service), to be used as an urgent attack weapon against submarines. The bomb should be capable of being dropped from an aircraft for engaging a submarine in deep waters as well as those on surface and periscope depths"

"We also are looking for bombs that could be launched from rotary wing (helicopters) platform too. The bombs should have sufficient high explosive to destroy target submarine at proximity distance. The conventional warheads' shelf-life should be about 30 years."

"We require the practice version to validate and train the air crew in bomb drop procedures. These versions will be reusable."
-- Unnamed Indian Navy Officer quoted by Press Trust of India

The 30 per cent defence offset clause will apply if a global tender is issued. Under the clause, the winning contractor should invent 30% of the deal amount in Indian industries by either buying or making defence equipment locally.

Indian Navy's aviation wing aircrafts include Sea Harrier fighters, MiG-29K fighters, Tupolev Tu-142 bombers, Dornier and IL-38 patrol aircrafts

Indian Navy's aviation wing helicopters include Kamov, Sea King, Dhruv ALH, Cheetah and Chetak

Bombs need to be effective in tropical conditions in depths up to 1,000m

The Navy will buy practice variants - an operational bomb in all respects except the warhead

we opened our eyes ............... our procurement of defense equipment is based on long term strategies instead of current threat perception .

Anthony is also trying to concentrate on the current threat level and is doing the necessary
