UAVs, snipers to be deployed for Obama’s security

After preliminary analysis of the security situation for US President Barack Obama’s visit, US security officials have now asked the Indian government to deploy Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for reconnaissance.

According to highly placed sources in the Ministry of Home Affairs, arrangements are being made to deploy the UAVs while a decision has already been taken to close airspace when Obama is flying over Mumbai and Delhi.

Sources said Obama will be accompanied by 500 Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Secret Service officers who will look after all security operations here.

Already, more than three Advanced Security Liaison (ASL) meetings have taken place between US officials, Mumbai Police, Delhi Police, the Intelligence Bureau, Army and other agencies. "A four-tier security is in place for the US President in Mumbai and Delhi. Apart from the 500 US officers, several thousand Mumbai and Delhi Police officers have been deployed at Taj hotel in Mumbai, Maurya Hotel in Delhi and places he is going to visit," said a source.


In Mumbai, the coastline will be guarded by the Indian Navy for safety of Obama.

The US Secret Service has already conducted several drills in Delhi and Mumbai with the help of agencies here. "The anti-sabotage checks were conducted in Mumbai on Wednesday while they will be conducted in Delhi on Friday," said the source.

US officials have also asked for deployment of snipers from specialist agencies at Delhi's Maurya and Mumbai's Taj hotels, and also on highrise buildings on the routes Obama will take. A safe passage has also been reportedly planned for Obama in the two hotels in case of any emergency.
