"Bridgestone regularly evaluates all aspects of its business to ensure we remain competitive and resources are allocated in a manner that best supports our business strategy," the company said in a statement.

Bridgestone says it notified United Steelworkers leadership in Des Moines about the workforce reduction, citing "demand constraints in the agriculture tire sector."

As of Thursday afternoon, the layoffs had not been announced on Iowa WARN, a state-run log of notices of layoffs. However, a spokesperson with Bridgestone says the company informed the state on June 5.

The company also said it notified the local United Steelworkers leadership in Des Moines.

Keenan Bell is the president of the United Steelworkers Local 310. He told KCCI that at least 118 of the union's members will be laid off.
