Yes, China does have restrictions on the release of foreign movies. The Chinese film market is controlled by strict censorship and protectionist policies that limit the import of foreign content. Foreign films can only be distributed in China through one of two centralized state-owned enterprises. They are imported either as part of a limited quota of 34 "revenue-share" films, where the studio gets a cut of the box office, or on "flat fee" terms, where the China rights are licensed for a lump sum by a local firm¹.

 

Additionally, the China Film Administration under the Publicity Department of the Chinese Communist Party reviews films and dictates whether, when, and how a movie gets released. This system has made it challenging for foreign films to compete, as they often receive late approvals, leaving little time for effective marketing campaigns in China².
