Special team will be constituted to study the modalities, he says, adding that he himself will go through the scheme that is being implemented in Karnataka and Telangana

Transport Minister M. Ramprasad Reddy on June 20 (Thursday) said a special team would be constituted to study the modalities for implementation of the proposed free bus ride for women in the AP State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) buses in Andhra Pradesh.

Addressing a press conference after visiting the Pandit Nehru Bus Station (PNBS) for the first time after taking charge as Minister, Mr. Reddy said he himself would visit Karnataka and Telangana to study the modalities, and assured that it would be implemented in the State at the earliest.

New buses

The Minister said priority would be given to buy new buses and addition of electric buses in the APSRTC fleet. He said people found to be misusing properties belonging to the APSRTC, or encroaching them, would be dealt with firmly.

“Our efforts will be directed at clearing the debts incurred by the corporation and initiate effective measures to strengthen the public sector giant,” he said.

Later, addressing a review meeting at RTC House, Mr. Reddy said officials had a pivotal role to play in development of the organisation. He advised the officials to make customer satisfaction their top priority, and assured that the corporation would receive all possible help from the government.

PTD Employees’ Union plea

Meanwhile, members of the Public Transport Department (erstwhile APSRTC) Employees’ Union urged the Minister to address the issues that the employees faced after they were merged in the government.

In a representation to the Minister, union’s State president P. Damodara Rao and general secretary G.V. Narasaiah said after the merger, the employees were deprived of various allowances, incentives and facilities.

They said, while the employees expected implementation of old pension scheme (OPS) after the merger, the authorities had withdrawn the then existing SRBS pension scheme. Free medical services to the employees and their families through referral hospitals was also withdrawn. Incentives that were given to drivers, conductors and other maintenance staff was also withdrawn, they pointed out.

The leaders urged the Minister to restore the allowances and incentives given to the employees in the past.

NWKRTC chairman Raju Kage claims loses due to Shakti scheme that provides free bus travel for women

Karnataka RTC to hike bus fare by 15-20% following financial crunch

The KSRTC chairman also blamed the Shakti scheme, which allows free travel for women as reason for the losses but it is also worth noting that the transport body has been suffering a loss prior to the scheme as well.

The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has announced that it plans on increasing the bus fare by up to 20%, owing to financial losses. The KSRTC reportedly passed a resolution on Friday, July 12, proposing a fare hike.

KSRTC Chairman and Gubbi MLA SR Srinivasa while speaking to reporters on July 14, said that the corporation has proposed a 15-20 percent ticket fare hike to the government. "The increase in ticket prices is inevitable," Srinivasa said, citing significant financial losses as the reason for the hike. “We held a meeting two days ago and decided to send a proposal for a 15-20 percent hike in the bus fare. The hike is needed for the survival of KSRTC, which is incurring huge losses after implementing the Shakti scheme.”

North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) Chairman Raju Kage also attributed the losses to the Shakti scheme.

However, it is also worth noting that KSRTC had also suffered a loss of around Rs 134 crore in 2018-19 period, way before the Shakti scheme was implemented in 2023. In 2020, the COVID-19 induced lockdown also pushed the transport body into a financial crunch, suffering a loss of around Rs 816 crore.

Srinivasa said that the KSRTC has incurred a loss of Rs 295 crore in the last three months. “The prices for fuel and other automobile parts have substantially gone up. The salaries of KSRTC employees have not been revised since 2020. The corporation has faced Rs 295 crore loss in the last three months,” Srinivasa added.

The Shakti scheme is one of the five poll promises made by the Congress before the Karnataka Assembly elections. The scheme allows for free travel for women in ordinary buses. The Congress party also extended the scheme to Telangana after winning the mandate in the 2024 Telangana Assembly elections.

Free Bus In AP From Aug 15th

One of the hallmark pre-poll announcements from Chandrababu Naidu as a part of the super six program is the free RTC rides for women program. Now that the TDP+ government is in power, there was a lot of anticipation on when this program will actually come to effect in AP.

In a flashing development, it is being reported that the government of Andhra Pradesh has locked the muhurtham for the implementation of this mass outreach program.

As per reports, Andhra Pradesh finance minister Anagani Satya Prasad has announced that the free RTC rides for women program will come to effect from the 15th of August, coinciding with the occasion of Independence Day.

This will essentially mean that the TDP government is bringing this program to effect two months after coming to power, which is a fairly efficient period of time.

While this program was already in effect in the neighbouring states of Telangana and Karnataka, there was scepticism on when it would commence in AP. It appears that this mass-friendly program would be commencing in exactly a month from now.

This is the first time in Andhra Pradesh that free bus ride program is being implemented.
