The allotment is part of the state’s efforts to position Vizag as a key technology hub.

In a move to attract major IT investments, the Andhra Pradesh government has allotted 21.16 acres of land in Visakhapatnam to Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) for a symbolic price of just 99 paisa, and would likely to clear the proposal in a cabinet meeting on April 15.

The allotment is part of the state’s efforts to position Vizag as a key technology hub. IT Minister Nara Lokesh had first pitched the idea to TCS during a visit to Tata headquarters in Mumbai in October 2024, urging the tech major to consider Andhra Pradesh for its next large-scale development center.

Over the following months, the state government held continuous discussions with TCS, ultimately leading to Monday’s cabinet approval. The move, officials say, is designed to send a strong message to the industry: Andhra Pradesh is open and competitive when it comes to attracting top-tier technology investments.

The decision also draws comparisons to a well-known industrial playbook, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as Gujarat Chief Minister, famously allotted land to Tata Motors in Sanand for 99 paisa, a move credited with catalyzing the state’s automotive sector.

First trial flight at Bhogapuram Airport conducted

The upcoming Greenfield international airport at Bhogapuram marked a key milestone as a trial flight was conducted on 21 June 2025 to test technical systems on-site. With construction reaching its final leg, officials from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) carried out a technical evaluation of the runway, signalling systems, and other aviation infrastructure.

As part of the trial, a small aircraft, reportedly the AAI Beechcraft King Air360, circled the airspace, descended close to the runway, hovered briefly, and then veered towards the coastline, collecting vital data in the process. These flight tests, also known as calibration flights, are standard procedures to verify the readiness of navigational aids, communication systems, and air traffic control equipment for commercial operations.

The airport’s Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower is nearing completion, with around 80% of the overall work done. This includes significant progress on the 3.8 km runway, terminal building, cargo complex, and other key infrastructure. Meanwhile, the 3.8 km runway is expected to be the longest in the country.

The data gathered during the trial flight at Bhogapuram Airport will now be assessed by aviation regulators, including the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), to ensure compliance with safety and operational standards. If all goes as planned, the airport is expected to welcome its first flight by June next year.

The Rs 4,592 crore airport is being developed under Phase 1 by GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Ltd, which signed a concession agreement with the Andhra Pradesh Airport Development Corporation. The Bhogapuram Airport is expected to be functional by June 2026.

Road access between Visakhapatnam and Bhogapuram to be heightened

Recent news revealed that the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) floated tenders to construct seven new roads in the city. These roads are meant to ease traffic challenges along the way to prime destinations including Bhogapuram Airport. As a result, connectivity to locations like Adavivaram-Sontyam, Bheemili, Gambheeram, Anandapuram, Tallavalasa, Boyyapalem, and more is being bettered.

INS Nilgiri Arrives in Visakhapatnam A New Chapter for the Eastern Fleet

Visakhapatnam, June 22, 2025: The Indian Navy’s frontline stealth frigate, INS Nilgiri, has officially joined the Eastern Naval Command, marking a significant boost to India’s maritime capabilities on the eastern seaboard. Designed under the indigenous Project 17A and named after the majestic Nilgiri mountain ranges, INS Nilgiri is the first of a series of seven guided missile frigates developed with advanced stealth, automation, and weapon systems.

Commissioned in January 2025 alongside INS Surat, INS Nilgiri is a 6,600-ton warship that integrates next-generation radar-evading design, powerful surface-to-air and anti-ship missiles, and cutting-edge sensors.

The frigate is equipped with advanced systems such as the Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS), Combat Management System (CMS), Integrated Communication System (ICS), Automated Power Management System (APMS), and Infrared Suppression System (IRSS)- all of which enable high levels of automation, efficiency, and stealth in operations.

The ship also features advanced aviation facilities, allowing it to function as a floating helipad capable of supporting the operation of helicopters like the MH-60R Seahawk and ALH (Advanced Light Helicopter) at standoff ranges, significantly enhancing its surveillance and anti-submarine warfare capabilities.

The frigate’s induction into Visakhapatnam, one of India’s premier naval hubs, underscores the city’s growing strategic role in national defence and Indo-Pacific maritime diplomacy.

Visakhapatnam, the headquarters of the Eastern Naval Command (ENC), is currently home to some of the Indian Navy’s most powerful vessels and infrastructure projects. Other key naval assets contributing to maritime security on the east coast include INS Visakhapatnam, the recently commissioned INS Arnala, INS Jalashwa, INS Sandhayak, INS Nirdeshak, INS Satavahana, and the strategic nuclear submarine INS Arighat.

With INS Nilgiri now anchoring at Visakhapatnam and supported by a fleet of cutting-edge vessels and training establishments, the Eastern Naval Command stands stronger than ever. Visakhapatnam is fast emerging as the nerve centre of India’s maritime future in the Indo-Pacific region.
