Karnudu - Arjunudu pakkana pedithey - the crux of the matter is - who is on the side of Dharma - and who fought for Dharma. That's what counts - so even for argument's sake Karna is greater than Arjuna ani oppukunna - Karna was on the side of Adharma at the end of the day - and history has rightly recorded his story - of a failed warrior.

don't think Mahabharatha is written in such simple terms, good and bad appears in most characters.

Drona and Bheeshma had no other choice they had to fight on kaurava’s side, since dhritarashtra was still the king. 

They had to obey their own dharma.

mahabharata is a complicated saga and involves politics and moral questions on duty etc.

If you look at the history, Pandu was made the king as dhritarashtra was blind but after Pandu died, Dhritarashtra was made the king. Then legally who gets to become the king, is it Pandu’s elder son or Current king Dhritarastra’s son. 
 

Empires just keep being passed from Dad to elder son. There is no tradition of empires being split between cousins. In this case Pandavas would fall on the wrong side of tradition for asking a part of empire. 
 

the whole Mahabharata is a complicated political thesis

Karna followed his path which he felt was his duty to his savior. Duryodhana gave him respect and gave him a position in the society and legitimacy.wether he was wrong or right is a debate.

Arjuna followed his path of Dharma which was following the path of his brother. As an individual fighter he got so many divine boons during the 14 year aranyavasa and fought on the side of Indra against Asuras but he did not use those weapons in kurushetra as they were not supposed to be used against Humans. He was also a virtuous person. As a warrior was stronger than Karna.
